ENGLISH FAL GRADE 11 (POEM-LEISURE)

Introduction

Good morning class, today we will be working on a poem. as grade 11 learners you should be able to annote a poem but don't worry I will discuss with you the most important aspects of a poem, remember to understand a poem you must read it more than twice. can anyone tell me what figures of speech are? why do you think they are needed in a poem?

we don't have much time on our side but let me read you this poem.

Task

Ok! You will work as a group , In a  group of 5 allocate a task for each other, don't forget to choose a group leader, while one is writing down points others should be reading the poem, others looking for figures of speech while some annotate and analyses the poem. i'm giving all groups 8 minutes to find these and 3 minutes to discuss ur answers/findings to your fellow class mates.

Process

All members of the groups should be creative, as you present your work tell us which part of the poem you liked and who you think wrote the poem and to whom was the poem dedicated to with quotes or lines from the poem to support you findings, your reasons must meet the reasoning capacity of a grade11 learner, you are welcome and free to use prior knowledge and all examples used in class.

Most of the groups really tried their best especially with the given time, they were able to come up with a lot of interesting ideas, some were even creative. this work taught them to have time management they were able to work as a team in exactly 8 minutes while some even finished before the given time although not all of them were able to finish in time but they managed to come with ideas that were satisfactory. their attitude during presentation of groups was not too embarrassing, they were fast and most importantly they were helping each other. one of the learning outcomes for this lesson was to teach them to trust each other, team building, self esteem and creativity . I needed them to think out of the box and to not rely on me as their teacher.

Conclusion

For grade 11 learners some still fail to identify poetic devices and still struggle to analyze poems. Davies's poem is beautifully straightforward in its form and it's simple repetition. this poem is too modern it should have been easy to crack for almost everyone because they worked in groups.

again to add more on this, leisure is written in rhyming couplets iambic tetrameter, which means there are four poetic feet, iambs in this case , per line.

I discussed the poem in class and used a Youtube link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUyja-7RcjY

The poetic device, the structure, the themes and the whole meaning of the poem and i gave them a homework to work on individually with four topics to choose from

  1. The best holiday of my life
  2. The happiest day of my life
  3. All about me
  4. My high school days

Credits

Acknowledgement for a good behaviour is apparent when one has done good deeds, I'm happy with how my learners are coming along with this chapter or parts of poems, I have noticed how much they put in effort in making it to the next grade even those who were struggling to work with poems are now enjoying every moment in discussing and analyzing of poems. some have even learned some English words from this. so I would give the whole class a 7/10 and since its just the beginning of the year i have much hope that we are headed for something bigger as a grade 11 class.

Poetic device

  • Davies begins this poem this poem with a use of irony, in the first line the poet uses rhetorical question. The following line contains irony. in the phrases such as "stand and stare and " beneath the boughs" the poet uses alliteration. after the first couplet, each couplet begins with phrases "no time".  the poet uses this repetition for the sake of emphasis. in the line "and stare as long as sheeps and cows", he uses a simile. there is a metaphor in " streams full of stars" and it is compared with the "stars at night". moreover there is a synecdoche in the phrase "beauty's glance". the poet also contains personification and epigram as well.
