Endurance- Running

Introduction

Running

Running is a great way to stay healthy and feel great. No one invented running since it was used as a means of transportation before cars and even horses were used. Although people have been running throughout history, competitive running started around 776 BC in the early Olympics. The Olympics were started by the Greeks as a type of ceremony to worship their gods. The world has kept the games going to this day. The Olympic games are divided into winter and summer games. There have been many great running heroes in the Olympics, in other races, and throughout history.

The first marathon was run by a Greek named Pheidippides. He ran roughly twenty-five miles to deliver an urgent  message. As soon as he gave his message he died of exhaustion. Terry Fox was a young Canadian. He was a survivor of leg cancer with the result of his leg being amputated. He was given a prosthetic leg and set out to run across Canada. He started in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He only ran to Thunder Bay, Ontario before developing lung cancer. He died in Thunder Bay from the cancer. Today, many people run in the "Marathon of Hope" in remembrance of Terry Fox. The fastest known man is Usain Bolt of Jamaica. He has the fastest time for the 100 meter, 200 meter and the 400 meter dashes, and a top speed of 44 km per hour (27 mph).

People have different preferences when they run. Some people like running long distances while others prefer to sprint shorter distances. Common long distance runs are half and full marathons. A half marathon in 21 kilometres or 13 miles. A full marathon is 42 kilometres or 26 miles. Short, fast running races are usually held in an arena or on a track and are called sprints. Sprints include 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter dash 1600 meter dash. The best part of running is you can make the rules, set the limits, and be your own opponent, if you choose to run alone. On the other hand, racing someone is always fun for a competitive spirit. In any case, running is a great way to stay fit and feel great.

Task

My task is to build up my endurance while running.

Process

In order to build up my endurance, I will run twice a week on an elliptical. I will set various resistance levels and push my self to beat my previous distance that I ran in 20 minutes.

Evaluation

I know that I am doing it right because my scores keep improving. A mistake that I am guilty of is running at full sprint from the beginning and tiring myself out. This is a common mistake for many people.

Conclusion

Again, my goal is to build up my endurance while running.
