The Real Hunger Games

Introduction

In the nation of Panem, each year everyone awaits the time of the Hunger Games. The nation of Panem is surrounded by 12 districts where one male and one female 12 to 18 are chosen from each to be shipped off to battle in a yearly televised game. They are forced to fight to the death and only one winner survives! In this WebQuest, you are going to pretend to be one of the chosen 'tributes' for the games this year.

Task

You will be asked to take the role of a 'tribute' in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. A twist on who you are, you must choose an individual who is either historically famous today, or has been famous in the past (ex. Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg Princess Diana, JFK, etc.). Describe the individual on how and why they are famous, their skills, and major successes in their lives. You will then write detailed accounts as if they are fighting in the Hunger Games and ways they would succeed in battle. You may refer to skills and ideas given in the book but you must explain why your chosen individual would be either good at those skills or think to do those chosen experiences.

Overview of what is expected:

1. Create a Diary in desired format (either link, printed, video, written, etc). Be creative!!

a. Introduction of Individual you have chosen (include why you chose them and a detailed history background)

b. At least 10 detailed entries in the Diary (one to three pages each or one to three minutes)

c. Conclusion of feelings with the assignment

2. Midway through the assignment everyone will break into groups to go over and talk through each individual's assignment to give feedback and ideas. This is to get others input to then come up with more creative thinking.

3. There will be a Hunger Games Diary Exhibit once they are all completed. This will be where students host their own station with their diary either printed out, written, on the computer, or through a video so that other students can walk around and check out each other's work. This will lead to discussions on how certain skills they read about in the book translated to their own ideas of what would work well also through successful famous individuals being put in place as a tribute.

Process

Students will read the Hunger Games in class over a period of a few weeks. As they are reading in class (outloud and to oneself - it will vary) they will take notes on what works within the telivised battle and what did not. Towards the end of the novel they will begin to choose an indiviual they think would be successful within the 'games'. Small groups will be assigned to be discussion to gain more creative ideas by the teacher. They will have time in class, in the computer lab to research, and at home to complete the assignments.

Evaluation

Students will be graded based off the quality of their research and creativity. Each diary entry must meet the guidelines that are laid out and if they are not points will be deductive. The idea of the project is to get your minds turning with new ideas, so do not be scared to be creative! Originality will be looked favorable on.

Conclusion

The overall goal of the assignment is to gain a better understanding of the text, and to come up with creative ways in which they think an individual would be successful in the book as well. This will require students to not only have a good textual comprehension, but also a great deal of creativeness to bring a new character they believe would be successful in the storyline.
