WebQuest Strega Nona SUMMARIZING Technique

Introduction

Now you know about questioning and next we are going to summarize. Let’s read the book Strega Nona together and then we will be able to tell each other what happened in the book and in what order. This is called a summary.

The most important thing about a summary is that you say it in your own words. We can use the pictures I have printed from the book Strega Nona as a guide for our summaries. We will use the words like, “first”, “then”, “next” and “finally”--do you remember what these mean? Let’s review quick before we start!

Task

Let me show you how I would say what happened in these pictures in my own words, a summary.

First, Big Anthony cooked too much pasta and it was overflowing out of Strega Nona’s house and he could not stop it.

Then, the pasta overflowed into the entire town and everyone was scared!

Next, the pasta filled almost the entire town and Big Anthony looked scared while he tried to stop it.

Process

Now it’s your turn... Let’s summarize the pages I am about to show you using summarizing words such as : First, then, next, finally, and more!

Evaluation

Now, you choose 2 pages in the book and summarize them aloud to a partner. If you need help trying to remember what happened them to read. Try to use the pictures the best that you can to remember and summarize. Choose a friend sitting near you to write down your summary while you explain.

Self evaluate:

Was it hard to remember what happened in the book or did the pictures help? Will it be easy for you to summarize next time you read a book?

Conclusion

Today and everyday when you are reading, you can go back into the book and summarize what happened in your own words.
