A Nutrition Expedition

Introduction

A group of children will be going on a three-day field trip to Fort Fisher. The dining hall does not have enough staff to prepare meals for these students to take on the trip.  Your group has been asked to plan and prepare healthy meals for this group of students to take on their trip. These meals will be eaten on the first day of the trip.

Task

Your teacher will divide you and your classmates into groups of four. Each person in your group will have a job. As a group, you will determine which job each team member will represent.

Nutritionist – Person responsible for using the Food Pyramid to                 determine the correct portion of each type of food needed for meals             and snacks.

Food Service Coordinator  - Person responsible for planning and             preparing meals with the Nutritionist.

Supervisor – Person responsible for making sure all team members           are participating, sharing ideas, and collaborating together.

Exercise Coordinator – Person responsible for creating activity task         cards for students to complete after each meal to keep hearts healthy         and active.

Process

Begin by reviewing all of the food groups.

Use the plate diagram from MyPlate.org to create meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and an afternoon snack.

Each plate will represent the amount of food eaten by one person for each meal/snack.

Evaluation

A rubric of guidelines will be provided.

Conclusion

The students will display their Healthy Plates and Activity Cards on a Trifold board. Each group will present their display to their classmates. A video will be taken of each presentation. Parents will be given a QR code to view the previously recorded presentations from home.
