EXTENSIVE READING ACTIVITY FOR LAPBOOK CREATION

Introduction

Introduction

Why is Reading important?

You probably know that even in your own language reading is regarded as important because it can be entertaining and educational, can open up new worlds and enrich your life, and can improve hand-eye co-ordination and enhance social skills.

But for learning a foreign language, in this case English, reading in that language has additional important benefits that can help you learn the language faster and more completely.

Reading is an essential skill for language learners. When your reading skills improve, your listening, speaking and writing skills improve too. Here are some of the specific reasons why English learners are encouraged to read in English:

  • The constant repetition of words and patterns in reading helps you learn and remember vocabulary and grammar structures.
  • Reading helps you become familiar with the rhythm of English. Over time it will start to feel natural and you will notice when a sentence or phrase doesn't seem right.
  • Unlike conversation, reading is something you can do on your own.
  • Reading is not expensive, often free.
  • Good reading skills can improve your other language skills. You need to learn to read before you can write.
  • Reading is the best way to learn and remember the proper spelling of words.
  • Listening as you read along can help you improve your pronunciation skills.

If you want to improve your English, learn to love reading in English. The best readers often get the best grades, jobs and opportunities.

WELCOME TO THIS JOURNEY!

Dear Students,

For part of this task you will be working individually in the reading and creation, when it is time to present, you will have the opportunity to share your ideas with your classmates and discuss them.

You were required to take the Extensive Reading Test to help you know in what level of reading you are. Last class you selected your reading book according to your level. For this project # 4  you have to read the whole book  and then you have to create a "LapBook" to illustrate your reading comprehension, finally you have to present your final project to your teacher and classmates.

Click on PROCESS, I will walk you through step by step on the elaboration of the Lapbook.

“He that loves a book will never want a faithful friend, a wholesome counselor, a cheerful companion, an effectual comforter. By study, by reading, by thinking, one may innocently divert and pleasantly entertain himself, as in all weathers, as in all fortunes.”

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS:

This activity was designed for CELI (Center for English Language Immersion) Level 4 students, as one of four projects that have to be completed during the course.  The four projects are worth a total of 60%, the remaining 40% is divided as follows:

20% Participation

10% Attendance

10% Online Activities

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to activate and reinforce other skills: Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and writing by reading.
  • Students will be able to develop critical thinking skills to aid their communication.
  • Students will be able to create a “Lapbook” to summarize their extensive reading assignment.

Additional Comments:

Reading should be a very important part of our English classes, from my own experience I have seen the advantages of including extensive reading as part of my courses, students develop more fluency , acquire more vocabulary , are more conscious of grammar structures, perform better academically and most important become more fluent in communication.

If you want to read more about this go to:
