Introduction
ANIMAL TREATMENT:

Animals are very useful to humans. You are familiar with your pets, and meat, milk, cheese, eggs, honey and some other animals products which are used as food, but have you thought about the other animal treatments? What about endangered animals? What about clothes made with animals? What about circuses? What about festivities involving animal suffering?
We are using animals for different goals and we sometimes don't realize about the impact of animal treatment.
Task
TASK:

This task is aimed at 2nd Bachillerato students and it will take three sessions.
The class will be divided in 5 groups, each one having to deal with a different topic related to animal treatment:
- Animal Cruelty
- Exotic and endangered animals
- Leisure and commercial use of animals
- Festivities involving animals suffering
- Domestic animals
The final task will be:
1) To create an online magazine with the articles and research made by the different groups in class in order to have a section specialized in animal treatment.
2) To debate in class about the points that each group has dealt with. This will take place after each group have presented their task in front of the class.

Process
PROCESS:
Before doing the task, have a look at these videos and articles:

Now you will be split up in five groups. Each group will choose one of the tasks:
|
Group 1: Animal Cruelty Deal with the issue of animal cruelty. Your group has to handle the issue of the different consequences of this treat in different countries according to the law of each country. What animal treatment could be considered as a crime? Make a chart comparing each country and show the results to the rest of the class. |
Group 2: Exotic and endangered animals Deal with the topic of exotic animals and endangered animals. Search some information about what sort of animals run the risk of being endangered, in which countries they are, and how we can prevent that situation. Write an article with all the important information you find. |
|
|
Group 3: Leisure and commercial use with animals Search some commercials, advertising campaigns and information about theme parks (Bioparc in Valencia, for example) taking into account the conditions of the animals living there. Do you believe those animals live in their natural environment? There also exist some commercials about some famous clothes brands which use animal fur in their clothing. Could you find some ads about those famous clothes brands? What do you think about this? Would you buy clothes made of animal fur? Write an article answering these questions. |
Group 4: Festivities involving animals suffering Find information about what kind of festivities around the world involve animal suffering, animal cruelty or any kind of cultural activity that violates animal rights.Write an article for our newspaper. Explain what the festivity is about and justify why you think animal rights are violated. |
|
|
Group 5: Interview about domestic animals Prepare an interview for the rest of the class in which you will be the interviewers and the rest of students will be the interviewees. Ask them their opinion about having domestic animals in a flat in an environment out of their habitat.Make your own questions and present the answers from the survey to the rest of the class. |

Teacher Page
TEACHER'S PAGE:
This Webquest has been designed for Second Bachillerato, because the level required is pre-intermediate or intermediate and I think it could be a good way to make students forget Selectividad for a while. Nevertheless, it can also be used with First Bachillerato students.
The main goal is to make students aware of the animal treatment done by humans at the same time they work in groups. Apart from this goal, there are several goals:
- Passive sentences
- Articles about mistreatment: “If you see an animal being hurt”, “Four young boys were arrested Sunday”
- Present simple
- Getting information
- Modal verb
- Survey
- Debate
- Vocabulary related to animal treatment
- Oral skills
- They will talk in front of their classmates
- Strengthen opinion structures
- Debate
- Share ideas, work together and reach an agreement
- Cooperative work
It will be carried out during three or four sessions, needing computer access at least in two sessions, as students are asked to find information on the Internet.
