ELEMENTS OF ART:

  • Line
  • Shape
  • Color
  • Value
  • Texture
  • Form
  • Space

OBJECTIVES:

  • List and explain the elements of art
  • Identify the elements of art in selected works
  • Apply the elements of art to their own work
Task

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • list and explain the elements of art
  • identify the elements of art in selected works
  • apply the elements of art to their own work
Process

ELEMENTS OF ARTS

  • Building blocks used by the artist to create a work of art.
  1. LINE
  • A mark with greater length than width made by pointed tool such as brush, pen or stick.
  • Considered a moving dot or the path of a dot.
  • Used to define edges, add shading or value, and create the illusion of form.

Ex. Horizontal, vertical or diagonal, straight or curved, thick or thin lines.

     2. SPACE

  • Area between and round objects
  • Two-dimensional, flat or limited to height and width.

Ex. Positive and negative space.

     3. FORM

  • Three-dimensional shapes expressing length, width and depth
  • As in cube, a sphere a pyramid or a cylinder.
  • The illusion of form in a drawing or painting is heavily dependent on the use and placement of values.

     4. SHAPE

  • Closed line and can be geometric.
  • Flat and can express length and width.
  • Could be geometric, such as squares, circles, triangles etc. or organic and curvaceous.

     5. TEXTURE

  • Surface quality that can be seen or felt.
  • Can be rough or smooth, soft or hard.
  • Texture created in drawings or paintings can be "simulated" or "invented". The illusion of texture is heavily dependent on the use of value.

      6. COLOR

  • Light reflected off objects.

Three main characteristics:

  1. HUE- main property of color, What differentiate colors.
  2.  VALUE- how light or dark it is.
  3.  INTENSITY- how bright or dull it is.

      7. VALUE

  • The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the darkest. The value halfway between these extremes is called middle gray.
