Edwin and Frances Hunter Arboretum Virtual Quest

Introduction

Hello, Students

There are lots of botanic gardens out here in the world, and in particular, in San Diego County.

But, I know not all of you are able to access them due to a variety of reasons.

However, today you will have your chance to go to a botanica garden, without the ugliness of enduring the heat and the exclusiveness to people with the ability to walk.

This is because you will be going on a virtual journey through the Edwin and Frances Edwin and Frances Hunter Arboretum.

Task

The task I have given you, should you choose to accept it, is the following:

Go on this website by Wayne Armstrong and find about eight plants or trees out of the many options it presents to you. From there, you are to create a journal detailing your finds on the website. In it you will include drawings of the plants/trees you choose to research and details of the information that the website provides on each plant or tree you picked.

Process

The following steps are what your process on this task should look like.

  1. Purchase or create a notebook in which you have enough space to draw a picture of a plant or tree you see on Wayne's Word. Make sure you have at least 10 pages in the journal. 5 to draw in, and 5
  2. Click on one of the 39 links on the front page or on any of the links on the second category of the top of the page, starting with "palm" and ending with "shrubs 3".
  3. Draw any tree or plant you see from the website in your journal.
  4. Write on the page, after your drawing, list any of the physical features you can notice on the plant/tree you have picked.
  5. Then, write down any information about the plant/tree that you can see from Wayne's Word.
  6. Create any noticing and wonderings for the plant/tree you have picked.
  7. Do steps 2-6 again, but with 4 more trees/plants, so that way you have research, described and drawn 5 trees/plants in total.

Your journal will be judged on the following scores:

  • Artistic Ability (10 points)
  • Amount of Information Detailed (10 points)
  • Listing of Physical Features (10 points)
  • Noticing and Wonderings (10 points)
