Introduction
"In 1964 Dr. Robert Cooke and Dr. Edward Zigler came up with a Headstart Program for preschool children The reason they found was the "Thinking on poverty was influenced by new research on the effects of poverty, as well as on the impacts of education. This research indicated an obligation to help disadvantaged groups, compensating for inequality in social or economic conditions. Head Start was designed to help break the cycle of poverty, providing preschool children of low-income families with a comprehensive program to meet their emotional, social, health, nutritional and psychological needs. A key tenet of the program established that it be culturally responsive to the communities served, and that the communities have an investment in its success through the contribution of volunteer hours and other donations as nonfederal share."(History of Head Start)
This is a long ago desire and wish of two educators of the past John Cumenius (1592) and Robert Owen (1771) who had similar foward thinking of children and their independance. At all three times children were not respected enough to be able to be indepentant to learn more then what they were told to learn. The upper class had it very advance but in all three times the lower class did not get the right to have good education. Cumenius believed "thought early experiences formed what a child would be like"(Fundamentals of Early Childhood Education, by George S. Morrison) snd Owen believd "Held that environment determines children's beliefs, behaviors, and acheiviements"(Fundamentals of Early Childhood Education, by George S. Morrison)
Task
John Cummenius wrote the first children's picture book which promoted the joy of learning in a time where kids of lower income were considered part of the work force. To be trained for minial labor .
Robert Owen believed education can help build a new society. During the time of new factories an children being the prime workers. Low income children started working as early as 4 years old. A education was not for them only upper class still got the education.
Dr Edward Ziglar was part of the planning committee to construct the Head start program. He believed the earlier a child become a part of education. He beilieved centers for self play would encourge the desiree to learn.
Process
1592 to 1670 Comenius had to a impact to mordern education because he showed world there is different levels of learning for all people easy to difficult.
1771 to 1858 Low income pepole were still considered slaves to the upper crust. They were look at to be unable to learn. Owen brought to the world that early childhood education could reform society.
1964 the government of the United States of America belived in preschool. But, saw the low income was unable to have preschool. Cooke and Zigler came up with Headstart a program for low income children in 1969.
Evaluation
The years for children to be included as a independent person with needs. Was brought to light over the years with these educators. Proving with the right education any child can make dreams come true.
Conclusion
"Head Start has served over 30 million children since 1965, growing from an eight-week demonstration project to include full day/year services and many program options. Currently, Head Start is administered by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) in the Department of Health and Human Services. Head Start serves over a million children and their families each year in urban and rural areas in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. territories, including American Indian, Alaskan Native and Migrant/Seasonal communities."(History of Headstart)
