Duolingo

Introduction

Welcome, Summit Superstars, to the Duolingo Project!

In this project, you will be learning a new language...yay! I hope that you not only learn, but that you have fun learning.

What is Duolingo?

Duolingo is the world's largest online language learning platform. It was recognized as Apple's iPhone App of the Year of 2013 as well as Google Play's Best of the Best of 2013 and 2014. Duolingo's adaptive experience has gamified elements to make language learning more fun and effective. 100 million students are learning a language with Duolingo.

Task

  • Read ALL the directions on the process page BEFORE you begin.
  • This will be a two-part assignment.
  • 200 points: Completed Course
  • 100 points: A short essay (5-7 complete sentences) about yourself in the language you've learned. Feel free to add pictures. Be prepared to read your essay to the class.

Process

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE HEADPHONES. It's best to bring your own from home if possible because so many of mine have been destroyed. :(

Part 1 (200 points)

Complete 1 section per day.

1.  Go to https://www.duolingo.com/o/fpgjxr

2.  Select the language you want to learn. You may pick any language EXCEPT one that you already speak or are taking classes for. Also, if you pick a language and you aren't happy with it, you can always switch. Just remember, you have two weeks to complete the course, so you don't want to wait too long to find the right language.

3. Put your email address, either personal or the class one (summitsuperstars+yourname@gmail.com)

USERNAME MUST BE YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME

4. Make the password Student1. If you choose to have your own password, make sure you take a picture of it or write it down in your notebook or somewhere that it won't get lost or left at home.

5. Sign up. Select CONTINUE on the next pop up screen.

6. Take the tour. Focus and pay close attention. READ AND FOLLOW the directions on the tour so that you can see everything Duolingo has to offer you. The tour will give you valuable information.

7. Your daily goal will be "INSANE" 20 minutes per day.

8. At "Choose your path" select Basics 1

9. Begin

10. Don't forget, you can "hover" over the words to get the translation if you forget. It's OK to use this "cheat" in the beginning, but if you're really interested in learning a new language, try to remember and learn on your own before getting help this way.

11: Each day, after keyboarding, you will complete one section, which includes all the lessons in that section. Some have 3, some have more, some have less. You must complete one entire section each day. When you finish the ENTIRE section, you may either have free quiet board 2 time til the end of class or you may work ahead.

12. Each day, after keyboarding, you will click on the next icon/section on your Duolingo homepage.

13. You can go to the "words" tab to see and review all the words you've learned so far.

14. You can also give yourself a profile picture and compete with your friends who are online at the same time.

15. If you have questions, go to https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us

16. Make sure you logout EVERY DAY.

17. To log back in each day, go to https://www.duolingo.com/ and login.

Part 2: 50 points

Type a short essay (5-7 complete sentences) about yourself in the language you learned. Feel free to add pictures. Be prepared to read your essay aloud to the class in your new language.
