The Romantic Era Music Project

Introduction

Using online sources, the student will be able to compare and contrast a song from the Romantic Era with a song from a later decade. (80s and beyond)

Task

The student will:

  1. Choose a song that he or she currently likes.
  2. Analyze it using 7 musical elements.
  3. Find a song from the Romatic Era that might have similar characteristics.
  4. Analyze it using 7 musical elements.
  5. Compare and contrast the songs.
  6. Write a two page, typed report on the two pieces of music. (1 paragraph per musical element, a brief history of the song and composer, and your opinions on the songs.)
  7. Create a Venn Diagram that represents your analysis.
Process

MONDAY

      1. Write down 5 current songs that you like (no language, please):

    3. Look up information about your current song. (from number 1) Write a paragraph about
        its history and composer.

    TUESDAY 

    4. Watch this video on Youtube. It is 30 minutes long. Listen for a piece of music you like. Can you find one that relates in some way to your current song? (tempo, chords, instruments, vocals, melody, etc.)

    5. Look up information about the song and its composer. Write a 4-6 sentence
        paragraph about it.

    6. Write a 2 page, double-spaced report on your two songs. Things to write about:

    • Paragraph from number 5
    • Paragraph from number 3
    • Write a paragraph on each musical element (talk about both songs in each paragraph)
    • Give your opinion. Talk about reasons why you like or don’t like each song. Are they musical reasons or just a vibe? An emotion they give you? Do they remind you of a certain time in your life?
