Diversity in Physical Education, Why is it Important?

Introduction

What is diversity? Diversity is the differences among people based on their race, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, language, religion, sexual orientation, and their geographical area.

This relates to a physical education setting because a lot of the times when activities are split into groups there is some neglect when it comes to dividing students. This WebQuest is going to allow students to study and understand why being diverse is such an important lesson to learn.

This WebQuest is intended for grade 6 and beyond.

Task

Please refer to the PROCESS tab in order to answer the tasks below.

1. When you think about your favorite sport, do you know where its origin is? What about a sport that was created outside of your country? Other than football and basketball name a few sports and their country of origin.

2. From one of the previous sports created in your country, can you find and identify a professional player who has left the country to pursue a career in another?

3. Think about your all-time favorite athlete. Now conduct your own research and try to find information about them. Where were they born? Where did they attend high school? College? First professional team?

4. Be prepared to give a short presentation about the player you chose for #3.

5. After everyone has presented, find one classmate who had a similar athlete and compare some of their qualities together.

Conclusion

The purpose of this WebQuest was to allow students the ability to conduct their own research and find out about the diverse world of professional sports. If the students can see how diverse that sports are then they can understand how it is important in their PE classes. This is in hopes that when it comes time to pick who they want to play with they don't always pick the same people to be their partners, but people who have the same interests in their games.
