Disorders Of The Digestive System

Introduction

Hello Biologists

This WebQuest is designed for you to investigate a disorder of the Digestive system

Digestive diseases, also called gastrointestinal diseases, are the diseases that affect the digestive system, which consists of the organs and pathways and processes responsible for processing food in the body.

Digestive issues can strike at any point along the body's digestive tract

Description

The digestive system, or digestive tract, includes the mouth, the esophagus, the stomach, the gallbladder, the small intestine, the large intestine, and the anus, all linked as a long twisting tube that starts at the mouth and ends at the anus. It also includes the liver and the pancreas, two organs that produce substances needed for digestion such as enzymes, reaching the intestine through small tubes. The function of the digestive system is to transform ingested food for use by the cells that make up the body. Food enters through the mouth and proceeds to the gut (digestive tract) where it is chemically modified (digestion) for absorption by the body or waste disposal. Digestive diseases are numerous and can affect any part of the digestive system.

Conclusion

  • More than 20 million Canadians suffer from digestive disorders every year. Those of you who are affected know how devastating this can be on your personal and professional life. However, because few people speak openly about their digestive symptoms, the magnitude of the problem is underestimated by government, employers and the general public.  Reading the statistics below will give you a realistic snapshot of how prevalent, expensive and life-changing digestive disorders are in Canada.
  • Digestive disorders cost $18 billion (2000) annually in health care costs and lost productivity.
  • Our digestive system is at work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week converting the foods we eat into energy to fuel our bodies and minds, fight illness and infection, and help use grow and repair injury. You may be able to improve your tummy troubles by making a few simple changes to what you eat, how you eat, how you relax and what kind of exercise you enjoy.

  •

Eat smaller and more frequent meals without increasing overall calorie intake. Don’t forget to have breakfast and avoid large meals late at night. The last meal should finish no later than 2 hours before bedtime

Select lean meats such as chicken, turkey, or lean cuts of beef, pork or lamb

Try to eat fish 3 to 5 times a week

Consume products that contain pre and probiotics such as yogurt, kefir, bananas, whole grain breads and honey

Include foods rich in fibre: For optimal general health and function of the colon, you should aim to consume about 20 to 30 grams of fibre from a mixture of fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains and every day

Avoid foods that are greasy, high in animal fat, and fried

Drink plenty of water each day while decreasing your intake of caffeinated, alcoholic, and sugar-rich or artificially sweetened beverages such as pop and fruit juices

Take your time when eating to chew food slowly and well

Practice a healthy lifestyle: exercise regularly and do not smoke

Maintain a healthy body mass index: aim to achieve your ideal body weight
