Discovering World Food Cultures

Introduction

In this webquest you are going to produce a digital food guide called Discovering World Food Cultures. The guide will introduce different traditional foods from around the world and explain their ingredients, history, taste, and cultural importance.

You will work together as a team to explore information from websites, videos, and online articles. At the end of this project, you will create a digital presentation and video about world food cultures using English.

Task

You are a team of food explorers who need to produce a digital food guide called Discovering World Food Cultures.

To produce the guide, you will work in groups of 3–4, and do the following:

1. Choose one traditional food from each of these categories (group work):

  • Asian food
  • Western food
  • Middle Eastern food
  • Dessert
  • Street food
  • Healthy food

2. Research information about the foods using online resources (group work).

3. Present a short summary of your chosen foods to the class. The class will help decide which food is the most interesting for each category (group work).

4. Write short descriptions about your final six foods and include pictures or graphics (individual work).

5. Edit and produce the final digital food guide using Canva, PowerPoint, or Google Slides (group work).

6. Create a short video presentation of your WebQuest project (group work).

7. Complete a self-evaluation questionnaire about your learning experience (individual work).

Process

Process 1 – Exploring Foods Around the World

1. Think about different foods you know from around the world. What foods are popular in different countries?

2. Make a list of three foods you enjoy eating and compare your answers with a partner.

3. Work in groups of 3–4. Search online for information about foods from different cultures.

* Your digital food guide is going to include these categories:

  • Asian food
  • Western food

  • Street food
  • Healthy food

* Choose one traditional food for each category.

Process 2 – Food Presentation to the Class

1. Assign each group member a role:

Student A – Asian food, Dessert

Student B – Western food, Healthy food

Student C – Middle Eastern food, Street food

2. Prepare a short summary of each food.

* Tips for your summary:

  • Your summary should be short – between 100 and 120 words.
  • You may use pictures from the Internet to support your presentation.

* Include:

  • The name of the food
  • Country of origin
  • Main ingredients
  • Taste and texture
  • Why people enjoy the food

3. Practice your presentation with your group before presenting to the class.

* Useful language for your presentation:

  • This food comes from …
  • One popular traditional food is …
  • The main ingredients are …
  • People enjoy this food because …
  • We think this food is interesting because …

4. Present your food summaries to the class using your own words as much as possible.

5. The class will decide which foods are the most interesting and suitable for the final digital guide.

  • Is the food interesting and unique?
  • Is the explanation clear?
  • Are the pictures attractive and suitable?
  • Is the English accurate and easy to understand?

 

Process 3 – Producing the Digital Food Guide

1. You are now going to produce Discovering World Food Cultures using the selected foods for these categories:

  • Asian food
  • Western food
  • Middle Eastern food
  • Dessert
  • Street food
  • Healthy food

2. You may use your original summary as a basis for your final writing, but include more details this time.

3. Write about 200–250 words for each food description.

* Include:

  • History or background
  • Cultural importance
  • Interesting facts
  • Ingredients and preparation
  • Taste and popularity

* Read your group members’ writing and give feedback on:

  • Content - Is the information clear and interesting?
  • Structure - Does the writing have clear paragraphs and good organization?
  • Language - Is the English accurate? Is the vocabulary suitable?

* Rewrite and improve your writing if necessary.

* Decide which photos, colours, and graphics you would like to use in your digital guide.

 

Process 4 – Editing and Video Presentation

1. As the editing team of Discovering World Food Cultures, discuss these questions with your group:

  • What will the cover page look like?
  • What colours and design theme will you use?
  • What order will the food categories appear in?
  • Will all slides have the same design style?
  • Who will edit the video?
  • Who will record the narration?

2. Work together to produce:

  • The digital food guide
  • A video presentation not longer than 10 minutes

3. Present your final WebQuest video to the class.

4. Watch other groups’ presentations and compare the foods and designs they selected.

At the same time, the project encourages teamwork, creativity, and the effective use of technology in learning. Overall, Discovering World Food Cultures is an enjoyable and educational activity that helps students learn in a more interactive and meaningful way.
