Introduction
The Philippines is home to many languages and local varieties. Different communities have their own words, expressions, and ways of communicating that reflect their history, culture, and identity.
However, some traditional or local words are becoming less commonly used, especially among younger generations. As people increasingly use Filipino, English, and other widely spoken languages, some words that were once common in families and communities may gradually disappear from everyday conversation.
In this WebQuest, you will become a Language Heritage Researcher. Your mission is to investigate local words used in your community, discover their meanings and origins, and find out whether younger generations still use them.
You will use online resources and, when possible, information from family or community members to create a Digital Dictionary of Local Words.
Guiding Questions
- What local words or expressions are used in our community?
- What do these words mean and how are they used?
- Which words are becoming less common?
- Why might some local words be disappearing?
- How can we help preserve our local language and vocabulary?
Learning Objectives
At the end of this WebQuest, students will be able to:
- identify local words and expressions used in their community;
- explain the meaning and proper use of selected local words;
- research information using reliable online sources;
- analyze why some local words may be becoming less common; and
- create a digital resource that helps preserve local vocabulary.
Task
Your task is to work individually or in a small group as a Language Heritage Research Team.
You will select 10–20 local words or expressions that are commonly used, becoming less common, or unfamiliar to younger people in your community.
Your group will investigate each word and create a Digital Dictionary of Local Words using Canva, PowerPoint, Google Slides, or another digital presentation tool.
For each word, include:
- Local word/expression
- Meaning
- English or Filipino equivalent
- Example sentence
- Where or when it is commonly used
- Who commonly uses it (for example, older or younger generations)
- Source of the information
Your dictionary should also include a short section answering:
“Why should we preserve local words and expressions?”
Process
Step 1: Form Your Research Team
Work in groups of 3–5 members.
Assign the following roles:
- Word Collector – identifies and collects local words and expressions.
- Language Researcher – investigates meanings and possible origins.
- Community Researcher – gathers information from family or community members when possible.
- Source Checker – verifies information using reliable references.
- Designer/Presenter – organizes the digital dictionary and presents the findings.
Step 2: Choose Your Community
Focus on a community or locality that you know.
Examples include:
- your hometown;
- your barangay;
- your municipality;
- your province; or
- your family's local language community.
Try to identify words that may be unfamiliar to people from other parts of the Philippines.
Step 3: Collect Local Words
Find 10–20 local words or expressions.
You may collect them through:
- conversations with parents, grandparents, or other community members;
- personal knowledge of your local language;
- books or local publications;
- dictionaries;
- reputable language websites; and
- online academic or educational resources.
If interviewing someone, ask simple questions such as:
- What does this word mean?
- How is it normally used?
- Who commonly uses it?
- Do young people still use this word?
- Is there another word that younger people use instead?
Step 4: Research and Verify
Search reliable online sources to verify the meaning and usage of your selected words.
Do not automatically accept the first definition you find.
Compare information from different sources and ask:
“Does this source support the meaning given by our community?”
If sources provide different meanings, discuss the differences and explain them in your presentation.
Step 5: Analyze Language Change
Choose 3–5 words from your collection that you think are becoming less commonly used.
Discuss:
- Why might people be using these words less often?
- Are younger people using different words instead?
- Does social media influence the way people speak?
- Does migration or interaction with other communities affect local vocabulary?
- What happens to a community's culture when certain words are no longer used?
Step 6: Create Your Digital Dictionary
Create a digital dictionary containing 10–20 local words.

Conclusion
Congratulations, Language Heritage Researchers!
Through this WebQuest, you explored the words and expressions used in your community and discovered that language is more than a way of communicating. Local words can reflect a community's history, culture, experiences, and identity.
You also learned that languages change over time. Some words may become less common as people interact with other languages and adopt new ways of communicating. However, documenting these words can help preserve an important part of a community's cultural heritage.
Reflection
Answer the following questions:
- What local word did you find most interesting? Why?
- What did you discover about your community's language?
- Why do some local words become less commonly used?
- Why is it important to preserve local languages and vocabulary?
- What can young people do to help preserve their local language?
Final Challenge
Choose one local word that you believe should not be forgotten.
Create a small digital “Save This Word!” card containing its meaning, pronunciation, example sentence, and a short explanation of why the word is important to your community.

Differentiation
For Struggling Learners
- Provide a sample dictionary entry.
- Provide a list of possible local words to investigate.
- Allow students to work with a partner.
- Provide graphic organizers for collecting information.
- Allow audio recordings instead of lengthy written responses.
- Provide teacher guidance during online research.
For Advanced Learners
- Require additional research about the history or origin of selected words.
- Compare vocabulary from two different Philippine languages or local varieties.
- Investigate how social media and migration influence language change.
- Include pronunciation recordings in the digital dictionary.
- Develop a larger digital language-preservation project for the community.
Teacher Preparation
Before beginning the WebQuest, the teacher should:
- Introduce the concept of Philippine linguistic diversity.
- Explain the difference between a language and a dialect in an age-appropriate manner.
- Review the suggested online resources.
- Ensure that students have access to the Internet and digital tools.
- Organize students into groups and assign roles.
- Explain appropriate procedures for conducting community interviews.
- Remind students to respect local speakers and cultural knowledge.
- Explain the importance of checking information against reliable sources.
- Review the evaluation rubric before students begin the activity.
Student Safety and Ethical Considerations
When students collect information from community members, they should:
- Ask permission before recording an interview.
- Respect the participant's decision not to answer a question.
- Avoid collecting unnecessary personal information.
- Give proper acknowledgment to community contributors.
- Avoid presenting personal opinions as verified linguistic facts.
- Treat local language and cultural knowledge with respect.
Extension Activity
Students may create a “Words We Should Not Forget” digital campaign.
Each student selects one local word that they believe should be preserved and creates a digital card containing:
- the local word;
- pronunciation;
- meaning;
- English or Filipino equivalent;
- example sentence;
- cultural significance; and
- a short explanation of why the word should be remembered.
The cards can be compiled into a class Digital Heritage Dictionary.
