Topic: Digital Citizenship (Be Safe)

This week we are looking at  three of Ribble’s nine elements in the domain of (S3) Be Safe . Read the information provided and follow the instructions to complete each task.

Digital Citizenship is defined as the ability to engage with the internet or technology in a safe and meaningful way.  As the rate of technological advancement continues to increase, the world as a whole is becoming more dependent on the Internet for day-to-day activities. That can mean checking a bank account, purchasing a product, or simply keeping in touch with a friend. This is why digital citizenship is such a crucial topic to teach today’s students.

The three elements  in the domain of (S3) Be Safe are:

•  Digital Law: Users understand the rules and policies that govern technology uses and take electronic responsibility for actions and deeds in the online world. 
• Digital Rights and Responsibility: Users understand that the requirements and freedoms are extended to everyone in a digital world. And they should defend and protect those rights of themselves and others 
• Digital Security and Privacy: Users take electronic precautions to guarantee safety of their information and data and that of others.

Activity One

Create a PowerPoint giving three examples of how to correctly and incorrectly secure your information online.

Process

Watch and analyze the video provided and participate in activities one, two and three .

Activity One

Many persons are not aware of how important digital security and privacy are, create an informative PowerPoint giving three examples of how to correctly and incorrectly secure your information online.

 PowerPoint Guidelines:

•          The PowerPoint must be maximum 10 slides in length.

•          Use appropriate language.

•          Be Creative

Activity Two

Think about a situation you experienced where safe internet use was not used and create a newspaper article including 5 rules for safe internet use. Include the situation in the article as well. This article will be shared with your classmates in the form of an oral presentation.

Activity Three

Create a situation in the form of a story using https://www.storyjumper.com/school  and include 3 digital rights and responsibility to help solve this problem.

Story Guidelines:

•          The story must be maximum 12 pages in length.

•          Use appropriate language.

•          Try to make the story as realistic as possible.

•          Be creative

This activity will be evaluated using a 1-10 scale.

Using Ribble’s S3 Domain of Be Safe, the three elements of this domain Digital Law, Digital Rights and Responsibility and Digital Security and Privacy were used to create this lesson.

This lessons aims to help children become better digital citizens by teaching them how to use the internet and their technology safely and correctly and to help the respect and stand up for others.
