Reproducing Flowers

Introduction

Congratulations!  You and your tablemates have become plant botonists, scientists that study plants!  Many of you have learned some things about how each part of the plant works together to help a plant grow and live healthy.  Today,  your objective is to review some of those parts and discover how flowers use their different components in order to live and reproduce!

Flowering plants

Task

Your essential question for today is Your task, as a botonist group, is to explore the plants and their reproductive parts. Then, work with your team to create a life cycle of plants on a poster.  You must label the parts in the cycle.  Each botonist will need to create a middle explaining the life cycle that the group created together.

Process

*Use one partners table for dissecting and the other partner's table for research*

First- Your group will begin by dissecting a flowering plant to see the different parts of the flower.  Gently pull the flower apart and explore the different parts of the flower.  Separate the parts to be with like parts.  Label the parts that you already know.  (There will be some parts that you don't know about, it's okay.)

Second- After exploring the flower, use the following resources to help you understand the parts of the flower and how they work together to reproduce.

Do you remember all the parts of the flower and how they work?  If not, grab a refresher!

Think you already know all that stuff? Well, extend your knowledge here!  Bonus if you can mention it in your presentation in the right context!

Response Content

Response describes the flowering plant life cycle, the information learned and an understanding as to why the life cycle is important.

Response describes the flowering plant life cycle, the information learned, but does not include why the life cycle is important.

Response describes the flowering plant life cycle.

No response is written, or the response is off topic.

Participation

Used time well in lab and focused attention on the experiment.

Used time pretty well. Stayed focused on the experiment most of the time.

Did the lab but did not appear very interested. Focus was lost on several occasions.

Participation was minimal OR student was hostile about participating.

Credits

Wow!  You should have learned a lot on the flowering plant's lifecycle.  Tomorrow we will be taking a test on the flowering plant's lifecycle to see just how much you learned today, as a botonist.

Just a reminder!

If you have any questions, raise your hand quietly and wait for permission to speak.

Use your voice level 2, which if you'll remember is slightly above a whisper.

Collaborate with your partner(s), both of you have great ideas and need to teach one another.  Decide who needs to speak first and who needs to actively listen.

When gathering materials for your group, walk quietly to the supplies and walk back.

Make sure that you are doing your job correctly, I shouldn't see flower parts on the floor or students playing with flowers.
