Detective web-quest designed by Kolodii Vlad

Introduction

Welcome! Your team has been chosen by the top-secret intergalactic agency F-Check (Future Check). We are facing an existential crisis: neural networks are now generating Deepfakes, fabricated news, and counterfeit documents so realistic that humanity can no longer distinguish truth from falsehood. Our mission is to build a reliable defense for future society.

Task

Your group consists of four experts. Your task is to investigate the secret mechanisms of Deepfake technologies and develop an innovative system for verifying information.

Role Responsibilities Final Product Contribution
1. Media Detective Investigates the most striking and dangerous examples of Deepfake videos/audio that have influenced politics or the economy. Case Study Report on the three most significant Deepfakes of the year.
2. Ethics Criminologist Analyzes the legal and moral responsibility for creating and disseminating fakes, and proposes ethical standards. Code of Conduct for AI Content Creators.
3. Technology Analyst Researches the technical markers and "footprints" left by Deepfakes (e.g., AI artifacts, metadata). Technical Description of the 5 key Deepfake markers.
4. Fact-Checker Architect Based on data from the other roles, develops a prototype for a verification system (concept scheme, algorithm). THE GROUP'S FINAL PRODUCT: Presentation of the "F-Check Protocol 2.0"
Process

To complete the mission, follow this step-by-step protocol. Use the provided resources and other sources (e.g., scientific journal articles or civics education materials).

Step 1. Dive into the Chaos (Week 1)

  1. Watch an example Deepfake video (e.g., AI-generated speeches of famous politicians). Discuss how convincing these examples are.

  2. Resource - https://youtu.be/cQ54GDm1eL0

Step 2. Gather Evidence (Week 2)

Each expert works on their role:

  • Media Detective: Uses search engines to identify "meme-worthy" and dangerous Deepfakes. Tip: Pay attention to sites like Snopes and Politifact.

  • Ethics Criminologist: Searches for current laws regarding copyright and defamation in the virtual space. Tip: Compare EU and US legislation.

  • Technology Analyst: Researches open-source tools for Deepfake detection. Tip: Search for "Deepfake detection algorithms" or "AI forensic tools".

  • Fact-Checker Architect: Creates the initial sketch of the system, determining what data is needed from colleagues.

Step 3. Synthesis and Solution (Week 3)

  1. Meet as a team, exchange reports (Case Study, Code, Technical Description).

  2. The Fact-Checker Architect leads the final formation of the "F-Check Protocol 2.0" (presentation). The Protocol must clearly answer the question: How do we stop the next fake crisis using the resources we already have?

Evaluation
Criteria  (Low)⭐ (Good)⭐⭐  (Excellent)⭐⭐⭐  (SUPER!)⭐⭐⭐⭐
1. Protocol Creativity You used ideas that were already very common. You added some interesting new ideas of your own. Your defense idea is new and very creative! Your Protocol is absolutely unique and highly innovative!
2. Information Quality Your reports only contain general information. You collected a lot of facts, but some were not critical. You collected many accurate and crucial facts for the Protocol. All expert reports contain solid, verified, and critically important data for the Protocol.
3. Teamwork & Roles Not all roles were fully completed; there were some disagreements. All roles were completed, but the final synergy was lacking. All roles were executed perfectly; the team worked very smoothly together. You didn't just complete your roles—you supported each other! True F-Check team spirit!
4. Final Presentation The presentation is confusing; it’s hard to understand the main idea. The idea is clear, but the presentation looks dull or rushed. The presentation is clear, looks professional, and has a logical structure.

Your presentation is engaging, logical, convincing, and your Protocol is ready for implementation!

Final Score

  • 16 Stars (Maximum): You are true geniuses of the digital world!

  • 12-15 Stars: Excellent work! You almost saved the world!

  • 8-11 Stars: Good effort! You just need to work on a few details.

Conclusion

You have successfully completed the mission! You have not only learned what Deepfakes are but have also become the architects of digital defense.

Reflective Questions:

  1. What is the biggest moral issue related to artificial intelligence that you discovered?

  2. How can you apply your fact-checking skills in your daily life (e.g., when consuming news)?

Continuing the Mission: If you wish to expand your work, choose one of the following projects:

  1. Develop a "How to Spot a Fake in 60 Seconds" video tutorial for social media.

  2. Create a detailed business plan for a startup specializing in content verification.
