Destination Music! WebQuest

Introduction

The 2019 Destination Music Concert is quickly approaching!  Like the Olympics, this concert takes place every 4 years, and Belgium is the lucky host country this year!  Music selections and musicians from all continents are represented at this concert to showcase the talent of the nations.  Unfortunately, in the chaos of concert preparations, a few submissions have gone missing.  Okay, more than just a few...6 to be exact.  The World Music Federation (WMF) needs your help to complete their program by replacing the missing submissions for France, Ireland, India, Cuba, South Africa, and China.  But we have to move quickly so the concert doesn't get cancelled.  A WMF representative has been sent to team you up with other Music Ambassadors to represent the countries with missing submissions.

Task

Your task is to create a digital presentation to replace the missing submissions.  Working in teams of Music Ambassadors, you will research your country and choose music that you feel best characterizes the music history and future musical impact on your country.  This task is designed to help you further your knowledge about world music specific to these countries.  You will discover the rich musical history that each of these countries possess and you may even draw connections between the music of the United States and the ones you are researching.

Process

Step #1:  Now that you are divided into teams of (4) Music Ambassadors, your next step is to select the country whose submission your team is going to prepare.  You may choose one of the countries (Ireland, India, China, Cuba, South Africa, or France) already prepared or you may choose a country not on this list.  Links for each of the 6 listed countries are available under the "Credits" tab.

Step #2:  Please read all of the steps as a group before you proceed with the rest of the activity.  Save yourselves some time and think ahead!

Step #3:  Once you've chosen your country of submission, now the fun begins!  You may begin exploring your country's rich musical heritage and begin gathering information for your submission.  Each member of the group will be responsible for finding and researching one song from your country.  Please create a Google doc to compile your research notes.  These will be turned in upon completion of your project.

Step #4:  Choose the role that you will play in preparing your submission.  The choices are:

Traditionalist - You will find a song that showcases traditional instruments used in your country.  Your slides should include pictures of these instruments.

Modernist - You will find an example of current music from your country.  Please don't go farther back than the 1980's when selecting this song.  Your slides should include a picture of the singer or band if possible.

Patriot - You will showcase the National Anthem of your country.  Your slides should include a picture of a famous landmark.

Linguist - You will find song sung in a language spoken in your chosen country.  Your slides should include a food item specific to your country.

All songs should include the composer and performer of the piece, the date the song was written, and how you think it represents the country's history and/or culture.

Step #5: Putting it together - For your submission you will need to bring these 4 selections of music together in a digital presentation.  Teams can choose to present their submission in Google Slides, Powerpoint, Prezi presentation, or movie.  (If you have other ideas for a digital presentation, please consult your WMF representative to make sure the format is conducive for submission into the event.)  Audio and/or video files should be included in your digital presentation as well as any graphics or pictures you find that would enhance it.  While one student may facilitate the construction of the actual presentation, all team members should contribute to the design of the submission.

Step #6:  All team members should submit their research notes to Mrs. Onufer by emailing your Google Doc.

Step #7:  Complete the Collaboration Break-Down sheet (provided by Mrs. Onufer) to be turned in.

Step #8:  Present your digital submission and turn in your research notes and collaboration page.  Await a response from WMF as to whether your country has been chosen for inclusion in the 2019 Destination Music Concert.
