Introduction
It is finally time! You have decided to open up your very own restaurant! You have been saving up enough money and purchased the building that you will use. However, before opening a restaurant, you must take care of the most important part: the menu! If you want your restaurant to be successful, you must plan and design a menu that will draw customers in! What will your theme be? What will you serve? Think long and hard about what will make your restaurant the most successful!
Task
Your job is to plan and design the menu for your restaurant. Your plan should include the theme of your restaurant, what the different courses of your menu will be, what you will serve for each course, and lastly the price of each item on your menu. Remember, you want your restaurant to be successful and rake in the dough!
Process
You should keep a log of each step in your menu process below. Your log should include the date of when you worked on each task, the amount of time working on each task, and the date that you completed each task. Additionally, you can add any notes at the bottom of your log.
1. Restaurant theme
The theme of your restaurant will likely inform many of the food items that you decide to put on your menu. Will you have a variety of themes?
2. Menu courses
What courses will your restaurant serve? How many courses will you have? This step will provide the structure for your menu.
3. Menu items
The "meat" of your menu! What items will you serve on your menu. For this step you should look at examples of other menus and think about what restaurants you have gone to before. Be as specific as you can be with each dish. Each item, should include a brief description of what the dish is.
4. Menu prices
You must decide the cost of each item on your menu. This will be done in decimal form. Everything on your menu must be given a price. You may also include special deals or sales on your menu.
5. Resources
You must include a resources page of any outside resources that you use in your project.
Evaluation
1. Completed menu with process details.
2. Appropriate menu structure and food items.
3. Appropriate pricing for food items.
4. Accurate resources list.
Conclusion
Congratulations! You have finished the menu for your new restaurant and are ready to open! You came up with great ideas and designed everything from the food items to the pricing of everything. Now that you have completed your menu, you can take the time to reflect on the process of creating it. What did you enjoy most about the design process? What was the most difficult? What would you change next time? If you enjoyed this, you can look up some of the menus from your favorite local restaurants and compare your menu to them. How are they similar? How are they different? Do you think your menu is a money maker?

Teacher Page
Mr. P is a 4th grade teacher on Long Island, New York. I love the design process and getting creative with different ideas. I also love to eat, which is what ultimately gave me the idea for this Web Quest. I think this could be extremely useful as a Math Workshop station used possibly during the teaching of my Decimals unit in Math. Enjoy!
