Describing a painting

Introduction

Students will go online and choose a twentieth century painter. Read about this person's life and background. Choose one famous painting the artist painted. Describe the painting and discuss the artist's style and the impression the painting has on you.

Record your presentation after writing it.

Task

Find a painter you might not know much about. Choose one of his or her paintings.  Take notes on this person's life. Describe important events in the painter's life. Describe the painting.  Record your findings in a 5-10 minute presentation. Search "The Most Famous Painters of the 20th century".  Also look at Wikipedia:  "20th century art"  , "famous twentieth century paintings"  "20th century Western Painting", "Modern Art".

Process

Who did you choose?   What important facts did you find out about this artist's life.  What do you like about this particular painting you have chosen.

Evaluation

Read your presentation to a school partner and then record it.  Ask your friend to tell you what they learned from your findings.

Ask yourself if what you learned from this exercise was helpful to you as a language learner.  Write down a few of your thought to share in a group setting.
