The term compound words seems very complex. However, do you know that you use compound words every day! As grade 3 students, you have learned and often use a lot about words including a beehive, touchpad, notebook, and hairpin. What do these words have in common? They are compound words. Compound words are words formed when two smaller words combine to form a new word.

For example        bee + hive= beehive

                          touch + pad = touchpad

                          hair + pin = hairpin
