Introduction
Hello everyone!
I don't know about you, but my favorite holiday is my birthday. It's the one day of the year where you get to celebrate you! :) Today, we are going to learn about your birthday by searching the web.
Task
Today you will be researching and taking notes over the most important day of they year. The day you were born! :) We will take a journey through multiple websites to see things like popular songs, award winners, and what day of the week you were born. Let's get started! Have fun! :)
Process
Let's start off with some of the events, songs, etc. that happened on your birthday. Please click on this link http://www.dmarie.com/timecap/ and in the box that asks your for your birthday type it in and see what you find. For each heading that shows up, please pick one thing under that heading to write down on your paper. For example, when my birthday was entered 01/11/1992, milk was only $2.14 per gallon.
Next, see how many you days you have been on planet Earth by clicking on this link http://www.timeanddate.com/date/duration.html It blew my mind to see that I've been on Earth this long! Write down the days on your paper, then pick either how many seconds or how many minutes you've been on planet Earth and write that down too.
Speaking of planet Earth, what about the moon? At this web address, http://www.briancasey.org/artifacts/astro/moon.cgi, you can figure out what the moon looked like on your birthday. Find this and write it down on your paper too.
A question that I've asked myself recently, is wanting to know on what day was I born. After a little research I found out that I was born on a Saturday. Click on this link to see what day you were born. http://www.mathsisfun.com/games/dayofweek.html After that, read the nursery rhyme under the calculation box and see if it fits you. Explain as to why or not on your paper. *Don't forget to add the day you were born and its description from the poem. Mine is Saturday's child works hard for a living*
So now we know all of this amazing stuff that happened on one of the most awesome days of the year, but what about other events that happened on your birthday? Click http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/on-this-day/ to find out and write down two events that happened in your notes. While you're at this website check out a few of the famous people that share your birthday and write down who it was and why they were famous. Alexander Hamilton was born on my birthday and he is famous because he was one of America's founding father's. An event that happened on my birthday was when Alabama seceded from the United States in 1861.
Last but not certainly not least, we are going to look at some awards winners during your birth year. Head to this website http://www.cmaworld.com/cma-awards/nominees/past-winners/ and pick one winner from a category in the CMA awards and write down on your paper. For example, in 1992 Garth Brooks was the Entertainer of the Year.
Conclusion
We have finished our journey through your birthday. We started on planet Earth, took a trip to the moon, and ended our journey at the CMA awards. Not too bad for an in class trip. ; ) I hope you took extremely good notes, because you will begin to write a research paper for the facts you found today.
Since Spring Break is around the corner, I urge you once again to write down the name of the web address, so you can finish your paper over Spring Break if needed. Since we have two days in the computer lab, I hope it isn't a problem.
I hope you enjoyed the journey through your birthday and I can't wait to see what exciting things you have in store!
Have a good day!
Ms. McCollum
