Introduction
Hey, team! We have been invited to compete in a great opportunity! Our group has been invited to compete in the 2014 6th Grade Mathematics Competition in... Orlando, Florida! It will be great! There will be competition, good times, great friends, fantastic food, lots of fun, and Mickey Mouse.
Through a very generous grant from Marchyl's Kountry Kitchen, a subsidiary of the Jones Corporation©, we will be able to pay for the entire trip. There will be no monetary requirements from you, or your parents.
Task
The task:
The grant is in the amount of $20,000. This money will be used to cover all costs. The students will create a budget and an itinerary using various websites to accomplish all tasks, such as booking a hotel, airfare, and food and various other costs.
The students will be able to use their knowledge of money as a decimal value to determine how much will be left from the original $20,000 after travel, hotel, and food costs are calculated so that they will have an equal amount of spending money to share amongst themselves.
Process
The process:
The "Competition team" will consist of the teacher (Mr. Jones), 4 students, and 4 parents/guardians.
The students will be given the following tasks/roles to complete the Webquest:
- Airfare Booking Agent
- This student will use Southwest.com to find the best airfare choice for the 9 travelers for a round-trip flight departing Nashville Intl. Airport (BNA) and arriving Orlando Intl. Airport (MCO)
- This student will use either Hotels.com, Booking.com, or Disney's hotel website to find the best hotel choice for the team. The student must take into account that the five (5) rooms needed for four (4) nights will be divided as the following:
- Room 1 - Mr. Jones
- Room 2 - Airfare Booking Agent / guardian
- Room 3 - Hotel Booking Agent / guardian
- Room 4 - Entertainment Agent / guardian
- Room 5 - Budget Agent / guardian
- This student will use Disney's ticket website to find the best possible deal on a 1-day ticket to Disney's Magic Kingdom in Orlando for the entire team (all 9 people) to use for the day after the competition.
- This student will use VisitOrlando and TripAdvisor to determine any other pricings for other things to do while in Orlando
- This student will use the Planapple site to create an online itinerary that can be accessed by the teacher, the students, and the guardians
- This student will ensure that the products' prices found on the various sites do not exceed the budgeted $20,000.
- This student will also calculate the left-over grant money to determine how much spending money will be distributed to each student/guardian pairing.
- The student will use the above websites to quality-check each expenditure.
Evaluation
Evaluation:
The teacher will evaluate the Webquest on the following criteria:
Did the students use the websites to find the required information?
Did the team break their budget?
Are all of the items accounted for (i.e. hotel accomodations, travel tickets, entertainment expenditures, food costs, left-over funds)?
Did the students follow a proper timeline in the itinerary?
