Welcome to our WebQuest Cultural Symbols of the United Kingdom!

In this project, you will explore the unique symbols that represent British culture and identity — from the flag and the royal crown to traditional holidays, music, and national landmarks. These symbols tell stories of Britain’s history, values, and traditions and show how the past and present are connected in everyday life.

Task

You will collaborate in teams to create a digital presentation or infographic named "Cultural Symbols of the United Kingdom."

Each team will:

  • Choose one cultural symbol of the UK (for example: the Union Jack, Big Ben, Stonehenge, the Red Telephone Box, or the Royal Family).
  • Research its history, meaning, and cultural significance.
  • Explain how this symbol represents British traditions, values, or identity.
  • Include interesting facts, images, and sources in English.
  • Present your findings to the class using Google Slides or PowerPoint.
Process

Step 1 Form Groups and Assign Roles

Each group should have 4 members. Assign the following roles:

  • Researcher – collects facts, historical information, and reliable sources.
  • Writer – organizes the gathered information into clear and concise text.
  • Designer – creates slides or visual materials for the presentation.
  • Presenter – leads the presentation and speaks on behalf of the group.

Step 2 Research Using Reliable Sources

Your presentation should include the following slides:

  1. Title Slide – project title, group name, and chosen symbol.
  2. History and Origin – the background and historical development of the symbol.
  3. Meaning and Cultural Significance – what the symbol represents and its role in British culture.
  4. Interesting Facts – notable or unique facts about the symbol.
  5. Modern Relevance – how the symbol is used and perceived today.
  6. Conclusion – why this symbol is important for understanding the culture of the United Kingdom.

Step 4 Present to the Class

Each group presents for 10 minutes. All members must take part in preparing and presenting the project.

Well structured, logical flow, easy to follow. Mostly organized, minor inconsistencies. Some confusing parts, unclear transitions between slides. Disorganized, main idea hard to follow.
Creativity and Visuals Bright, engaging visuals, original and appealing design. Good visuals, but somewhat standard format. Few visuals or repetitive elements. Lacks images and creative design.
Teamwork All members contribute equally and actively. Most members participate, some slight imbalance. Uneven participation, only a few active members.

One or two people complete most of the work.
Presentation Skills Confident and expressive delivery, good eye contact and energy. Clear delivery, but limited expression or interaction. Frequent reading from screen, low engagement. Unclear or incomplete presentation.
