Creating Colors

Introduction

Have you ever wondered why there are so many different shades of orange? Are you curious as to why there are dark purples and light purples? Were you wondering why there are soft pinks and hot pinks?

Today we are going to discover the answers to some of those pesky questions that you have been thinking. You are about to embark on a WebQuest that will enlighten you on how colors can become new colors based on how you mix different colors together. You will also discover why these colors are labeled as primary, secondary, and tertiary and you will be able to label colors yourself!

Task

Task 1: Watch this video in order to gain understanding of how when colors are combined they make new colors.

How to Mix 3 Colors to Make a Rainbow - Youtube

Task 2: Watch this video that describes the meanings of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

AQS2E214 Primary Secondary and Tertiary Colors - Youtube

Task 3: Take the paints that have been provided to you (red, yellow, blue, and white) and create at least 6 new colors. This is a chance for you to see first hand how two or even three colors can be combined to make one new color.

Process

As you complete task 3, please record your findings and label each color used and each color made as primary (p), secondary (s), or tertiary (t). For example, if you combine blue and yellow and found that it made green; you will write down that blue and yellow make green. Don't forget to label these 3 colors though! You will hand in your findings to me when this assignment is complete. You have until Friday (that's 4 days away).

Color 1 Color 2 Color 3 Color Created
Blue Yellow   Green
Red White Yellow ???

This chart is one example of how you can record your findings. My example does not include labeling because I want you to be able to do this on your own.

Another way that you can show your recordings is by creating a poster and showing how the colors were combined and what colors you used to combine them.

Once again, do not forget to label each color!

     -   For each additional color you create I will give you 3 extra credit points for up to 5 colors. In order to receive all 3 points for each color made you must: make the color, record your findings, and label each color correctly.

     -   For 5 extra credit points you can turn in a short 2-3 minute video of how you combined your colors to make new colors. We will show these to the class so that they may learn something from you.

Evaluation

Was the assignment turned in on time? (5 points)

Is your name on your assignment? (5 points)

Did you create 6 new colors? (30 points)

For each color created you will receive 5 points.

Did you record your findings? (30 points)

Each recording (ex. blue and yellow make green) you will receive 5 points.

Were each of the colors correctly labeled as primary, secondary, or tertiary? (30 points)

For each color you label correctly you will receive 5 points. I will give 1 point for each color labeled incorrectly.

BONUS POINTS:

Did you create 5 extra colors for extra credit? Were they recorded? Were each of the colors labeled? (15 points total)

1 point for each color made, 1 point for each color recorded, 1 point for each color in the recording labeled correctly.

Did you turn in a 2-3 minute video for extra credit? (5 points)

Conclusion

I hope that you have fun with this project and gain an appreciation for how colors are made. It can be so much fun to be creative and make things your own. You will be able to say that you are an artist and a creative thinker! You should gain a knowledge of how primary colors can be combined to make secondary colors, and how when you mix primary and secondary colors together you can create tertiary colors.

Teacher Page

My name is Erin Mock. I created this webquest in order to give kids a better understanding of how they can combine colors to make new colors. It gives them a way to explore and create and builds their confidence in science and art. This can be a fun assignment for them that is hands on and allows them to be in control. It allows them to see first hand how primary colors make secondary colors, and how combining secondary and primary colors create tertiary colors. To be able to experience somethings allows them an aspect of knowledge that they would not gain from simply watching a video, someone else perform the activity, or reading about this assignment.
