Create a Fish Webquest

Introduction

Welcome to the Create a Fish Webquest.  You will be in a very unique position.  As the newest marine biologist on staff at the Create a Fish Institute, you will be designing and testing a brand new fish species.  As you complete your mission, you will be exploring the diversity of fish adaptations and the unique abilities of marine life to survive the tough environment on the coral reef.

Remember the three most important traits of your fish include: finding food, competing with other marine species, and surviving predators.  You will be choosing body types, mouth types and color patterns.  Be sure to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of all the options in each category.  Once you have designed the perfect fish, you will need to test it on the reef.  You are now going to control specific behaviors of your new fish species.  Be sure to think about your physical adaptations and the best behaviors for your fish to maximize its survival.

Let’s show the world the next great marine biologist and  jump in the ocean to start this exciting journey.

Task

1.Research and define the following 3 terms: adaptation, physical adaptation and behavioral adaptation.

2. Design a fish that has the physical adaptations and behavioral adaptations to survive on a coral reef ecosystem.

Process
  1. Use the following link to learn about adaptations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94cp15Y7PWk

  1.  As you watch the clips define the following terms:

    Adaptation-

    Physical Adaptation-

    Behavioral Adaptation-

  2. List and describe one example of a physical adaptation and explain how the animal benefits from this adaptation.

  3. List and describe one example of a behavioral adaptation and explain how the animal benefits from this adaptation. Create a Google Slideshow that features your best fish.  Use the rubric below to to guide you through the construction of your slideshow.

  4. Use your imagination to design and test multiple fish.  Once you have tested a minimum of 3 different fish, select your best creation.  Go to the following site to build your fish  https://contrib.pbslearningmedia.org/WGBH/conv20/lsps07-int-buildafish/index.html

  5. Create a Google Slideshow that features your best fish.  Use the rubric below to to guide you through the construction of your slideshow.

Conclusion

Congratulations!  You have created a new species of fish that can survive the coral reef.  As a result of completing your mission, you have discovered the connection between physical adaptations and behavioral adaptations.  As a young scientist, you have explored how these adaptations benefit life on the planet and keep an organism alive and thriving in their environment.  We appreciate all your efforts and look forward to the next science adventure.
