Introduction
The leader of the expedition described above was an Italian seaman named Christopher Columbus. An expedition is a journey made for a special purpose. The purpose of Columbus's expedition was to find another, shorter way to Asia. For years Columbus pleaded with King John of Portugal to pay for a trup across the Atlantic. In 1484 the king asked a group of experts for advice. They told him that Asia was much father away than Columbus thought. The king agreed and sent Columbus away. Once again, Columbus persuaded King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to give him money. In return he promised to give them new lands, spices, money and new people to become Christians.
