Cover Letter and Resume Development

Introduction

The purpose of this webquest is to provide guidance for individuals looking to create Cover Letters and Resumes as they enter the workforce.  The information provided will detail the importance of a Cover Letter in terms of then getting your Resume in the door.

Task

In this section students will be required to create a Cover Letter.  Based on the information provided in the "Writing Your Resume Cover Letter" video which clearly provides an example, students will need to create a Cover Letter for their Resume highlighting their interest in the position they are applying for, their level of experience related to the opportunity, and create a sense of confidence in anticipation of someone calling them to further schedule an interview.

Students will then list previous positions inclusive of Dates of Employment, Place of Employment, Job Title, and a brief bullet point description of their job duties.  This information will be used to create their Resume.  Other information required is their Career Objective or Summary of Qualifications, Education and Professional Training, and any other skill sets acquired that are beneficial to the needs of the company

Process

Creating a Cover Letter:

Look on Bayt.com for a entry level position in your chosen field of study



Address the Cover Letter to the Hiring Manager/Department 

If this information is not available then the Cover Letter can be addressed to the Human Resources Department listing the name of the Company.

In the body of the Cover Letter, detail briefly previous skill sets related to the position in either a small paragraph or bullet points. 

 

For example: "communication skills"

The Cover Letter should provide contact information and create a sense of expectancy that with your qualifications, your services meet the needs of the organization.  Thus creating a need for further contact via telephone or a face-to-face interview.

Creating a CV:



The CV should start with your personal contact information (Name in Bold and Larger Letters, address, telephone, and email address).

The next section is either  a Career Objective or Summary of Qualifications.  This section expresses what you are looking to obtain.  It's obvious a career, however you should identify what you are looking to do in your career.  You have an opportunity to sale yourself through words.  This section should be brief but highlight your experience and where you are looking to go within your career. For example:

"Ambitious health and safety student looking for HSE work experience with Company 123 in order to better own knowledge of work place hazards and controls, so better equipped to help improve community with future career"

Using the CV template provided complete all the sections remember that you are selling yourself to prospective employer 

Remember you never want to put "References Available Upon Request" on a Resume.  When it is necessary, they will ask you to provide references on the actual application.

Conclusion

After completing your Cover Letter and Resume, you should be able to successfully search for employment online as well as apply for jobs in person .
