Introduction
Conjunctions are words that are used to connect words, phrases, clauses, or sentences in a sentence. They serve to join different parts of a sentence to make the meaning clear and coherent. There are three main types of conjunctions:
-
Coordinating Conjunctions: These are used to connect words, phrases, or clauses that are equal in structure. The most common coordinating conjunctions are "and," "but," "or," "nor," "for," "so," and "yet." For example:
- I like tea, and he likes coffee.
- She wanted to go to the park, but it started raining.
-
Subordinating Conjunctions: These are used to introduce dependent clauses (subordinate clauses) that cannot stand alone as complete sentences. Subordinating conjunctions show the relationship between the dependent clause and the independent clause. Examples include "because," "although," "while," "if," "since," and "unless." For example:
- I'll go to the store if I have enough money.
- Because it was raining, they stayed indoors.
-
Correlative Conjunctions: These are pairs of conjunctions that work together to join words, phrases, or clauses. Common correlative conjunctions include "either...or," "neither...nor," "both...and," and "not only...but also." For example:
- Either you come to the party, or you stay home.
- She is not only intelligent but also hardworking.
