Community Helpers & Their Jobs - Pre K

Introduction

Hello and welcome to the amazing world of Community Helpers and their specific jobs!  

Within this interactive webquest, students will work to learn all about the different helpers and workers within the community. We will learn what they do, where they work and how they do to make an impact in our community we live in. By learning and comprehending this information, students will become more aware about helpers and their jobs performed daily within their community.

Task

Tasks for each child to complete within a small group setting (group of 3-4 students): 

 

The group should click on the link and watch this video together to learn more about community helpers.

To help the children get involved and interacting, each student should take a turn on the community helper memory game. Talk about that helpers specific job once a match is made.

Next, each student (individually, taking turns) should click on the link below to watch/interact with Community Helpers, What Am I quiz. This will test each of their knowledge and understanding.

Process

The Process: 

Step One: Each small group should click on the video link in the task section to learn more about community helpers. Discuss with the group and teacher/para once the video is finished. 

 

Step Two: To get the children interacting and becoming involved, each group should click the next link to play a community helper matching game. Each child in the group should take a turn at choosing two cards to see if they match - if they don't then it's the next students' turn and if they do, then discuss that specific job with the group to gain more understanding. 

 

Step Three: Next, each child in the group should individually click on the link to go to the community helper video quiz. This will help to test each child's knowledge of a community helper and their job.

 

The total estimated time to complete the tasks in the webquest is approximately 20-30 minutes depending on the amount of discussion that takes place within each small group.

Recognizing each community helper within the matching game and being able to use their knowledge to tell their job. 

The student will be able to match each community helper and know their specific job to some of the matches within the memory game.

Task Three: 

 

Being able to pick the correct community helper from the questions asked within the quiz video with knowledge gained from previous tasks. 

The student will be able to answer a few of the questions correctly within the quiz video.

Conclusion: 

By participating in and completing this Community Helper webquest, each student should have an increased knowledge about helpers within their community and what they do. This webquest should be a fun and enjoyable activity for the students while they are learning and gaining knowledge. 

 

Advice for Teachers and Parents:  

We suggest, while working on the Community Helpers unit all week long, to visit this WebQuest a few times during the week to give the children to become successful when completing the link activity and quiz.
