PART 3 - THE LITERATURE CONNECTION

For this part, you will be reading a picture book set in your country.  It will connect you to the culture and people of South America.  During class, you will listen to all the picture books in all 6 webquests. Each book has remarkable characters and illustrations. You will be making a mini-book that reflects your understanding of the read aloud.  When you do the writing for the mini-book, we recommend that you cut an index card to fit each page and write your answers neatly on the lines. This way, if you make a mistake, you can redo it before gluing it into the book. Make sure all of your answers are completely clear since the questions are not going to be copied into your book. Any reader should be able to know what you are talking about because you restated the question or clearly labeled your lists or charts.

The story WAITING for the BIBLIOBURRO is inspired by the heroic efforts of a real-life librarian named Luis Soriano Bohorquez. He started a mobile library and journeyed over the mountains and through valleys to bring literacy and culture to the children in rural Colombia.  The story is told in English and Spanish. Around the world, there are many librarians who travel long distances to spread the joy of reading. In Kenya, camel caravans deliver books to nomads in the desert. In Sweden, Stockholm's "floating library" delivers books to islanders via book boats. In Zimbabwe, there is a donkey-drawn mobile cart library.  In this story, Luis delivers books to children in remote villages with the help of his two donkeys, Alfa and Beto.

Ok, now that you have heard the story in class, you are ready to answer some questions and make a book.  There are few steps.

1--We will construct the mini-book in class together.  You will have extra cards in case you mess up your drawing or your writing.  You can cut the cards up and glue answers into the actual book so you don't write directly on the book pages. You can also use the lined side of index card pieces by trimming them so you can write neatly and straight across for each answer and then glue them to fit nicely onto the pages.

2--- Write the title neatly somewhere on the cover, not too big because you need to fit a picture too!  But make it colorful and thick-lined enough to stand out like a title should. Draw an illustration from the story and color it fully.  There should be no white space on your cover when you are done, like a real book cover.  It will look amazing!

3---Read the questions for page 1, 2, and 3.  (Remember you are not writing on the inside of the cover.) Write your answers on page 3-3 in your notebook before you plan to write in the little poster book.  On page 3-3 divide it into 3 sections by counting down 9 lines and tracing it and then counting up 9 from the bottom and tracing. Make sure you restate the 3rd question because it is a RADD format.  Restate, Answer, Detail, Detail.

Question 1---Find evidence of how Ana helps her family. You must find at least 3 examples and write them in complete sentences.

Question 2---Make a chart of 5 English and Spanish words.  Include  these 4 English words: stories, librarian, library and book. Put these in one column labeled English and find the Spanish form to put beside them in the chart.  Find a 5th word on your own.

Question 3---RADD. Why is Ana so impatient for the bibliotecario to return?  Use two details from the text to explain your response.
