Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory

Introduction

Students will be able to describe and differentiate cognitive psychology, behaviorism, and social cognitive theory and reflect on them.

Answer the following questions:

  1. How much do you believe your environment affects your learning?
  2. Can you think of an example where you learned from observing someone else?

Definitions

Cognitive Psychology studies brain functions and mental processes, specifically focusing on how people think and learn. It is a psychological science that aims to better understand how individuals acquire, perceive, process, and store information.

Behaviorism, also known as behavioral learning theory, is a theoretical perspective in psychology that emphasizes the role of learning and observable behaviors in understanding human and animal actions. Behaviorism is a theory of knowledge that states all behaviors are learned through conditioned interaction with the environment. Thus, behavior is simply a response to environmental stimuli.

Social learning theory acknowledges that people can learn without direct reinforcement or punishment. It recognizes that people can learn from observing others as well as from their own experiences. The theory incorporates cognitive and environmental factors in explaining behavior.

Task

For this assignment, students will be able to create a Venn diagram that accurately compares and contrasts Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory.

Evaluation

Rubric for Assessment

Criteria 3 Points 2 Points 1 Point
Accuracy of Theoretical Content Demonstrates comprehensive and precise understanding of Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory. All key concepts are correctly identified and placed in appropriate sections of the Venn diagram. Shows moderate understanding of the theories with some minor inaccuracies or omissions in theoretical details. Most key concepts are correctly represented. Limited understanding of the psychological theories. Significant misconceptions or missing critical theoretical components.
Comparative Analysis Clearly and critically highlights unique characteristics and overlapping elements between the three theories. Demonstrates deep insight into the nuanced differences and similarities. Identifies some similarities and differences between theories, but lacks depth or comprehensive analysis. Minimal or superficial comparison of the psychological theories. Lacks meaningful connections or distinctions.
Visual Organization Venn diagram is meticulously organized, with clear, legible labels, color-coded sections, and a professional, easy-to-understand layout that enhances understanding of the theories. Venn diagram is reasonably organized with most information clearly presented, but may have some minor visual clarity issues. Poorly organized Venn diagram with confusing layout, illegible text, or difficult-to-follow visual representation.
Conclusion

Students will share their Venn diagrams with a partner and discuss their findings.

  1. Describe a situation where Social Cognitive Theory can be applied in a classroom setting.
  2. Describe a situation where Behaviorism can be applied in a classroom setting.
