Introduction
Climate change is one of the most serious problems facing the world today. It refers to the long-term changes in temperature, weather patterns, and climate systems caused mainly by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests, and industrial pollution. These activities release greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which trap heat and make the Earth warmer.
As a result, we are experiencing rising sea levels, stronger typhoons, heat waves, floods, droughts, and melting glaciers. Climate change does not only affect the environment—it also threatens human health, food security, water supply, and livelihoods, especially in vulnerable countries like the Philippines.
Understanding climate change is important because the choices we make today will affect future generations. By learning about its causes, effects, and possible solutions, we can take action to protect our planet and create a more sustainable future.
Task
Students will work in small groups to investigate climate change through short readings, videos, or pictures. They will create a simple poster or short presentation that explains:
-
What is climate change?
-
What causes it?
-
What are its effects?
-
What can people do to help?
Process
Step 1: Motivation (5 minutes)
Show pictures or a short video of floods, heat waves, melting ice, or typhoons.
Ask:
“What do you notice? Why do you think these are happening?”
Step 2: Grouping (5 minutes)
Divide the class into groups of 4–5 students.
Assign each group a focus:
-
Group 1: Causes
-
Group 2: Effects
-
Group 3: Solutions
-
Group 4: Local impacts (community, school, family)
Step 3: Research & Discussion (15–20 minutes)
Each group reads the materials or watches a short clip.
They discuss and write key points.
Step 4: Poster or Mini-Presentation (15 minutes)
Each group creates a poster or 3-minute presentation with:
-
Title
-
3–5 key ideas
-
One picture or drawing
Step 5: Sharing (10–15 minutes)
Groups present their output in front of the class.
Step 6: Reflection (5 minutes)
Ask students:
-
What did you learn today?
-
What can you personally do to help the environment?
Evaluation
Evaluation
| Criteria | Excellent (5) | Good (3) | Needs Improvement (1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Content | Accurate & complete | Some details missing | Incomplete |
| Creativity | Very creative | Some creativity | Plain |
| Teamwork | All participated | Some participated | Few participated |
| Presentation | Clear & confident | Somewhat clear | Hard to understand |
Conclusion
Climate change is not just a global issue—it is something that affects our daily lives, our communities, and our future. Through this activity, we learned that our actions, whether big or small, can either harm or help the environment. By understanding the causes, effects, and possible solutions to climate change, we become more aware and responsible citizens. This lesson reminds us that protecting the Earth starts with us, and together, we can make a difference by caring for our planet and choosing to act wisely.
