Introduction
Statistics is used every day to help people understand opinions, behaviors, and trends. In this WebQuest, students will work in groups to create their own survey question, collect data from classmates, and analyze the results using statistical methods. Students will become researchers by designing surveys, organizing data, and presenting conclusions based on their findings.
Task
In groups, students will:
- Create an original survey question
- Survey their classmates
- Organize and analyze collected data
- Create graphs and statistical summaries
- Present their findings to the class
Process
Step 1: Form Groups
Students will work in groups of 3–4 people. Each group will choose a topic they are interested in studying.
Possible topics:
- Favorite music genre
- Hours of sleep each night
- Daily screen time
- Favorite school subject
- Time spent studying
- Number of sports or activities students participate in
Step 2: Create a Survey Question
Each group must create one clear survey question to ask the class.
Examples:
- “How many hours of sleep do students get on average?”
- “What is the most popular lunch choice at school?”
- “How much time do students spend on social media each day?”
Groups should make sure their question:
- Is easy to understand
- Can be answered honestly
- Produces data that can be analyzed
Step 3: Conduct the Survey
Groups will survey classmates and record responses in a data table.
Students should:
- Collect accurate responses
- Keep data organized
- Make sure every classmate has a chance to participate
Step 4: Analyze the Data
Groups will:
- Calculate the mean, median, and mode (if applicable)
- Find the range
- Create at least one graph or chart
- Look for patterns or trends in the data
Possible graph choices:
- Bar graph
- Pie chart
- Line graph
- Histogram
Step 5: Create a Presentation
Groups will create a short presentation that includes:
- Their survey question
- Collected data
- Statistical calculations
- Graphs/charts
- Conclusions about the results
Presentation options:
- Google Slides
- Poster
- Canva infographic
- Short oral presentation
Evaluation
| Criteria | Excellent | Good | Needs Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Survey Question | Clear and thoughtful | Mostly clear | Confusing or incomplete |
| Data Collection | Organized and accurate | Minor errors | Incomplete data |
| Statistical Analysis | Correct calculations and strong analysis | Few mistakes | Limited analysis |
| Presentation | Creative, organized, and clear | Mostly organized | Difficult to follow |
Conclusion
This WebQuest allows students to experience how statistics is used in real-world research. By collecting and analyzing data from their classmates, students will strengthen their understanding of statistical concepts while also practicing teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills.
