  • ANZAC is an abbreviation of The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
  • All ANZACs were volunteers.
  • ANZAC Day is a public holiday in Australia and commemorates the landing of Australian and New Zealand troups at Gallipoli, 25 April 1915.
  • ANZAC cookies were created by wives of soldier's who wanted to bake healthy goodies for their husbands.
  • The youngest ANZAC was 14 years and 3 months old! 
Task

Today you will be working in groups of 3 to research ANZAC Day. Presenting at the end etc..

Process

Working in your groups, your task is to complete THREE of the activities below. You have six lessons to complete the three activities. Please spend TWO lessons on each activity. 

You are able to choose which three activities you would like to complete.

Knowledge

Task One
Examine the information about ANZAC Day. Write a report to present to the class.
You must include
:
- The meaning behind ANZAC Day
- What date we celebrate ANZAC Day in Australia

- How many ANZAC's travelled to Galipoli
- The dates WW1 began and finished
- Why you think ANZAC Day is so important?

Task Two
There are many symbols associated with ANZAC Day, including The Rising Sun, The Last Post and Red Poppies. Pick ONE symbol and prepare a powerpoint presentation OR poster, summarising relevant information. You must include
:

- The meaning behind the symbol
- How does the symbol represent the spirit of ANZAC Day?
- Who chose the symbol to represent ANZAC Day?
- Where can this symbol be found? Eg. The Rising Sun is worn on the upturned brim of hat that soldiers wear.
- Please include labelled pictures and explanations throughout your presentation.

Completion of this WebQuest will allow students to identify and discuss the significance and historical origins of ANZAC Day, while gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of the importance of symbols and emblems associated with ANZAC Day. Students will explore, examine, analyse and summarise research while creating an interesting end product.

This Web Quest is designed for a Year Three class and will take a minimum of six one hour lessons to complete. Students should spend two lessons per activity. It makes up part of a unit of work - Days and weeks celebrated or commemorated in Australia.

The activities are to be completed in pairs or groups of three, focusing on Blooms Taxonomy theory. The students will need access to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and various websites on the internet including YouTube. Suggested links have been included for each section.

Students will have the choice of which tasks they wish to complete.

Content Description
Year 3: ACHHK063 Days and weeks celebrated or commemorated in Australia (including Australia Day, ANZAC Day, Harmony Week, National Reconciliation Week, NAIDOC week and National Sorry Day) and the importance of symbols and emblems. 

Elaboration
Identifying and discussing the historical origins of an important Australian celebration or commemoration.
Recognising the significance of other days or weeks including ANZAC Day.
