Solving One Step Equations

Introduction

You have just been challenged by your older brother to figure out how much money he makes per hour.  You have nothing to fear since you already know how to write expressions from word phrases and equations from sentences.  This WebQuest is going to build upon those skills and by the end of this WebQuest, you will be able to solve one-step equations.

Task

Your older brother just received his first paycheck.  You ask him "How much did you make?" He responds "$162.50".  You ask "How much money do you make per hour?"  Your brother said "I worked 25 hours.  If you can figure out how much money I make per hour, I will give you $10." 

Process

This is an independant task.  GOOD LUCK!

1.  You will start off by reviewing how to write an equation from a sentence.  Go to these websites and follow the instructions.  Play 1 time.

2.  Now that you have reviewed writing equations, let's solve them.  Go to the website and carefully read the information given to you.  You will use this website to answer questions 1, 2 and 3 on your handout.

Evaluation
 
Your performance will be evaluated in the following ways:  1. Thoroughly answering all questions correctly using complete sentences.     2.  Correctly writing the equation from your task, correctly identifying the coefficient found in the task equation, and correctly identifying what the variable represents in the equation.

Writing the task equation correctly and solving it. Had most of the parts for the equation. Not solving the equation correctly. Had all of the parts for the equation but in the wrong place, resulting in a wrong answer. Had all of the parts for the equation, in the correct places, but because of a mathematical error, the answer was wrong. The equation was written properly and solved correctly.
Answering parts b and c from their task. Had neither b nor c correct. Had one of the two correct. Had both correct.

Now that you have completed this task, you have reinforced old skills and learned new ones.  You will leave this task with the understanding and knowledge of how to solve one-step equations.  Equations are used everyday in real life.  They are used many times without people even knowing they are using them.  When you are figuring how long it will take to get somewhere or the sale price of an item (to name a few) you are using equations.
