The Chinese Zodiac

Introduction

This lesson is designed for beginner students. The main purpose of the following activities is to allow students to get familiar with the Chinese culture, as well as encouraging them to develop higher order thinking skills. We will learn how the Chinese Zodiac is organized, and the different meaning that each zodiac animal has on the Chinese society.

Task

You are going to watch the vide " The myth behind the Chinese Zodiac" , analyse it, and discuss some questions about its origin. Besides, you are going to be ready to work on a hands-on activity and let your creativity go wild. Finally, you are going to read the blog about "Which Chinese Zodiac are you? " , and prepare a short speech about your findings.

Process

Activity one ( Listening Activity) 

Watch the video carefully,  then discuss with your partner what you understood about it. 

- After that , answer the questions below: 

1. In what order did the animals reach the finish line? 

2. Choose the correct answer. How many animals are there in the Chinese zodiac? 

a. 13 

b. 10 

c. 12 

d. 5 

3. There are two overlapping zodiac systems, as far as the system of the 10 celestial stems is concerned, which elements are part of it? 

4. According to your date of birth and the information in the video. Which zodiac animal belongs to you? 

5. Write a short summary of what you understood from the video.

Activity two ( Hands-on Activity)

Activity 3 ( Oral presentation).

For this activity, you will have to work in groups of 4-5 member. You  will  have to read the following blog about "Which Chinese Zodiac are you? "

-After reading the blog, you  need to talk and express your  ideas about the animal of which you did the origami activity.  

-Then ,you  have to present this information to the whole class by using a Power Point presentation or another useful tool . You must explain  what the animal , that you chose,  means according to the Chinese zodiac.
