People around the world like to celebrate special events, but did you know that not everyone celebrates the same things? Some people celebrate events like Christmas or Easter whilst others celebrate Hanukah. 

This Webquest will be helping you to learn more about the Celebration, Chinese New Year. 

Task

In this Webquest you will be following a set of steps that will take you to different websites where you will read and learn about Chinese New Year. 

At the completion of this Webquest, you will be writing an information report about Chinese New Year.

Step 1: Exploring the basics

 

Read the questions on the worksheet carefully. Watch the Chinese New Year video by clicking on the picture below. The video will help you begin to answer some of the questions on your worksheet. Remember- there are still lots of websites to explore so don't use big writing when you fill in the boxes!

Step 2: Why do people Celebrate Chinese New Year?

It is important to know why people celebrate events.

The link will take you to a podcast. That means that you will be taken to a site to listen to a person talk about Chinese New Year. There will be no pictures so you will need to listen very carefully! (This will help you answer question 3 on your worksheet).

Step 3: When is Chinese New Year celebrated? 

Not all events are celebrated at the same time of the year. Some events are celebrated early in the year during January, whilst others are celebrated later in the year and not everyone celebrates the same events. 

Your first job is to find out when Chinese New Year is celebrated and who celebrates it. Is it celebrated on the same date every year? Does everyone celebrate Chinese New Year?

Step 4: What are some of the Chinese New Year traditions?

 

When people celebrate events there are often special traditions that they follow. For example when people have a birthday, their friends and family will often sing 'Happy Birthday' and give them presents.

It's your job to learn about some of the traditions which people follow during Chinese New Year. Do people wear special clothes? Do they put up decorations?

2. Do you have enough information to write your information report?
