World Religions I

Introduction

Congratulations!  You've been hired by the President of the United States to head a special committee.  You see, ever since the tragedy of September 11th, the division amongst many Americans has become greater.  It actually began during World War II, when people from all over the world migrated to the United States bringing with them their different religious beliefs.  There are six major religions in the world, and many definitions for the word "religion".  There are both similarities and differences in each one of the the world's major religions.  Your quest is to explore these religions in order to find the "secret key" to what we all have in common.  The President needs your help!!   The information needs to be presented at the next State of the Union Address, which is in two weeks.  Let's get moving! 

 

Task

As the head of the special committee, you will research one of the world's major religions that will be assigned to you - Confucianism.  You will then present your findings to the President (your teachers) through a power-point or Prezi presentation. 

Process
  1. Using the internet resources listed below, you will research your assigned religion and answer the questions on 5" x 7" index cards, using one card for each question. 

  2. Thoroughly answer the following questions:

  • What is the religion's main spiritual beliefs and practices?
  • What symbols are used to represent the religion?
  • Outside of the United States, in what regions of the world is this religion predominantly found?
  • When was the religion founded?
  • What are some other important dates associated with this religion?
  • What are some stories, myths or legends associated with this religion? Choose one and write a one paragraph summary of the tale.
  • List some other interesting facts about this religion?
  • Who are the important people associated with this religion?
  • Using your research, you will design a power-point presentation for the President. You will include all of the above information. The presentation must be organized, clear, include images, and in general, have a nice design. 
  • Evaluation

    1. You will get marks for your research. You must show this to your teacher before your power-point is made. Cards will be reviewed with teacher and feedback for improvement will be given.

    2. You will use the feedback and make revisions. This is for marks too. Once revisions are reviewed with teacher, you will then brainstorm how to design the presentation.

    3. You will then complete the final draft - a power-point presentation. You can use Prezi if you want instead. Must be clear, organized, include images, headings, titles, and the information from your research.
