Communicable Diseases WebQuest 2

Introduction

A communicable disease is a disease that is transferred from person to person through contact.  Communicable diseases can also be referred to as a contagious or infectious disease.  Communicable diseases are microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, viruses or protozoas.  Examples of communicable diseases include, but are not limited to, influenza, measles, conjunctivitis, H1N1,  mumps, whooping cough and chicken pox.

The purpose of this webquest is for you to research communicable diseases in order to design and make a communicable disease fact sheet and an informational poster.

Task
  • Your group's task is to research one of the following common communicable diseases: The Common Cold, Influenza, Strep Throat, Conjunctivitis, Stomach Flu, Whooping Cough, Pneumonia, or Bronchitis.
  • Your group will need to complete a Communicable Disease Fact Sheet and display the information on a poster to inform people of the disease.

You may make a copy of this template to use for your fact sheet:

Process

First, you will need to research your communicable disease to gather information for your fact sheet.  You can do this by using the links below.

When you finish your fact sheet, your group will display the information on a poster. The poster must include the facts and a picture of the virus or bacteria that causes the infection. If there is no picture of the virus/bacteria, then you may include a photo of the part of the body that becomes infected. (lungs, eyes, etc.)

  • An overview of the disease including what causes it
  • Symptoms of the disease
  • How the disease is spread
  • Incubation period
  • How to treat the disease
  • How to prevent contracting the disease
  • Any other information you think is important

The poster must have a visual of the actual virus or bacterial AND/OR a visual of the part of the body that becomes infected.

Conclusion

Once you have completed your fact sheet and your poster, your group will present it to the class through an informal oral presentation.
