Cells, Tissues, Organs and Systems

Introduction

By: Julia Walmsley, Jishna Sunkara and Sarah Cullen (Caledon East)

A WebQuest on the body: what cells, tissues, organs and systems are, and why they’re so important.

Our body is like a complex, intricate machine. Cells, tissues, and organs are the parts that make up the machine. Systems are what help the body complete its functions. By the end of this WebQuest, you will have a full understanding of:

  • How are cells organized into tissues, organs, and systems?

  • Different organ systems in the human body

  • Osmosis and diffusion – how do they work?

  • Comparing how uni- and multi-cellular organisms meet their basic needs

  • Parts of a plant and animal cell

  • Technologies regarding cells and organs and their development over time

Get started by checking out your task.

Task

Your patient has lost many of their organs and damaged their cells and tissues in an accident.

You are the greatest doctor in the world when it comes to the body, and you are tasked with saving them… which is unfortunate, as you only managed to achieve this title by fluke.

You must do your research so you don’t let your patient down! You may not be ‘the greatest doctor’, but you do have a knack for learning. Once you do your research, write a book explaining all the concepts you learned so you can use it for reference for any future jobs assigned to you!

Process

Step 1:

Before you even think of treating the patient, you must know how cells are organized into tissues, organs, and systems.

Use the following links to gain an understanding of this organization, then make a chart presenting this information.

https://www.ck12.org/biology/cell-organization/lesson/Organization-of-Cells-BIO/

Organ systems are one of the levels of organization in the body. There are many different systems, and you must know what they are!

Compose a list of the major body systems, what body parts are a part of that system, and what that system’s functions are. The links below will help:

Step 2:

The next step is to learn more about cells and their organization, as you need to be an expert on the topic before treating your patient. What are unicellular and multicellular organisms? What are diffusion and osmosis, and how do they work? Using the following links, compose a minimum of one page of notes about diffusion and osmosis, and unicellular and multicellular organisms. Your page must include:

-Definitions of all the topics

-List three unicellular and three multicellular organisms, what those

-Two real-life examples for each diffusion and osmosis, as well as one example each of osmosis and diffusion that take place in the human body

-Any other points you find important

Step 3:

There are two different types of cells: plant and animal cells. What are the differences between them? You wouldn’t want to accidentally use information about the wrong cell! On that note, part of learning about cells is examining them… but what are the technologies regarding cells and organs, and their development over time?

Oh no! You forgot all about the annual doctor’s quiz. You have a limited amount of time to study and you aren’t allowed to have any material whilst taking the quiz! Study effectively and achieve a score of over 125 to make sure no one suspects anything. Do your best and keep your job so you can make sure you save that patient!

Conclusion

You wrote a book with your last minute research, but did you manage to save your patient?

That depends on how well you did your research and applied it!
