Cells and Science!!

Introduction

Science is the pursuit of the natural world based on evidence. Cells are the smallest unit of life that can live on its own and make up all living organisms and tissues in our bodies. Since cells and science basically work with each other, scientist consider them the smallest unit of life. Cells house the proteins, chemicals, and signals responsible for everything that happens inside our bodies. All of this information is basically being talked about in this WebQuest.

Task

1- What do researcher think is one cause of memory impairment related to growing older?

2- How might fat cell be able to help people with spinal cord injuries?

3- How are frog eggs being used in research involving human cells?

4- What are Schwann Cell? How are they affected in multiple sclerosis patients?

5- What role do cells play in preventing the stomach from digestion itself?

Process

1- Hormones and protein that protect and repair brain cells and stimulate neural growth also decline with age. Older people often experience decreased blood flow to the brain, which can impair memory and lead to changes in cognitive skills.

2-People that are suffering from spinal cord injuries and other health conditions that involve death or damage to the neurons have no way of recovering. If a person had a spinal cord injury, doctors could take some of their own fat, treat it and then put it back in; they also wouldn’t need to worry about rejection!

3- Frog eggs are used in research to renew human cells John Gurdon and his Cambridge University Colleagues hope to capture the substances responsible and use them to reprogram ordinary adult skin or blood cells, according to the

reseachers. Researchers are also hoping to convert transform specific adult cells in to immature ones. Excess early-Stage human egg from reproductive treatments can be used to make stem cells.

Evaluation

4- Schwann cells are surrounding neurons that protect the degeneration of nerves by blocking thrombin, a blood- clothing protein that can also damage nerves. These findings may aid in the further understanding of genetic and molecular mechanisms behind condition such as multiple sclerosis.

5-The stomach can’t digest itself because it is lined with epithelial cells, which produce mucus. This forms a barrier between the lining of the stomach and the contents.

Conclusion

The subject that caught our interest was the study about the frog eggs. They were used to renew human cells. They also used excess early-stage human eggs from reproductive treatments to make stem cells!!
