Introduction
This lesson is a lesson in our first grade PYP IB Unit: How We Express Ourselves. This lesson exposes students to many different traditions around the world related to losing a tooth.
Before the lesson, the students will be reminded that there are similarities and differences amongst all of us.
Task
The goal of this lesson is for students to become more aware of the similarities and differences between themselves and others. This lesson will be used to enhance our celebrations unit. As the story is read, students will engage in meaningful conversation facilitated by the teacher.
Process
Students will listen to the story: Throw your tooth on the roof. During the story, students will learn about traditions of kids all around the world. Some may make connections to their own culture in this story.
Evaluation
After the story, the students and I will process the story. We will discuss some of the similarities and differences in this book. There is no formal evaluation to this lesson. Instead, this information will be used to help demonstrate social-emotional learning/ growth and acceptance of others.
Conclusion
The students will help the teacher add notes to our "Around the World" Chart. Throughout this unit, students have studied multiple celebrations of others around the world.

I believe that this lesson is culturally relevant and increases awareness because it exposes children to traditions that other children have around the world. In this unit we compare school life, home life, architecture, food, holidays and more. The students seem to enjoy this unit. This specific lesson does not integrate technology. The unit does include technology. Throughout this lesson, the students watch videos and interviews about life in different areas. Youtube and Google Maps are frequently used in this unit.
