Introduction
Did you know that there are over 10 national holidays celebrated in America? Similar to other countries around the world, America has several holidays that recognize the achievements of some of its citizens. A few of these are Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. Which one of these is your favorite? Why do you like it the most? Who does it honor? Understanding our country and the reasons why we celebrate the people we do is an extremely important part of being a good citizen!
Task
Your job is to research these four holidays just mentioned. Learn as much as you can about each day. You will choose one of the four holidays and create a poster to share with the class that highlights that holiday. Discover who each holiday honors, why that person, or group of people, is important to our country, and any details regarding any specific activities we engage in as part of each celebration.
Process
To accomplish this task
1. First, decide which holiday you are going to highlight. To do this, you may look up each holiday in the dictionary and learn why we celebrate it.
2. Next, find library books that provide information on the holiday you chose.
3. Next, get information from one of the internet sources provided that refers to your topic. You can find these in the Resource section.
4. Finally, once you have enough information, you will construct a poster that will include the following:
- Your holiday name in bold lettering
- Who the holiday honors
- When it is observed
- How it is celebrated (activities, parades, gatherings, etc)
- Why you chose it
