California Regions Webquest

Introduction

Congratulations! You and your team of travel agents have been chosen to present on behalf of the Rancho Santa Fe Travel Agency. You will present before clients who are interested in, but undecided, as to which California Region they would like to visit: the Desert, the Pacific Coast, the Mountains, or the Central Valley.

Your job is to convince them that your chosen region is the ultimate travel destination. The question you will address is: what makes your chosen California region unique from the other three regions? To answer this question requires some teamwork and research. Let's begin!

Task

You will create a travel brochure which the Rancho Santa Fe Travel Agency will use to advertise its services. A brochure is a written advertising publication with pictures that is used to sell an idea.

Your will design and create a brochure that contains four aspects you are presenting on for your region, and a poster that summarizes this information. You will use the World Wide Web on an adventure of your own...this webquest.

In the brochure, you will include general information about regional animal wildlife, plant life, and areas of historical and recreational interest. In addition, you must include pictures and images to appeal to the eye of your future clients. Remember, travel advertising is a very visual experience.

Process

The first thing on your agenda is to decide on a California Region for which you will create your advertising brochure. After some research, you realize that one of the four California Regions has more travel appeal than the others. It will be your starting point for research.

Finally, you will decide how to create your brochure. Below is a list of the parts of your brochure with details about what is required of each one.

Topic: Parks and/or Historic Sites

Find and list two major parks and/or historic sites unique to the region. Describe what they are and when they were built (if a historic site) and location of each. Include pictures with captions as to what they are. At least one of one pictures must be hand drawn. Be sure to include what the hours of operation are and/or time of year they are open, so clients know when they can visit these sites.

Topic: Recreational Activities

Find and list two recreational activities unique to the region. Describe where the activities take place (indoors or outdoors), and where you can do them. Include a picture of each activity with captions of the activities. At least one of the pictures must be hand drawn. Be sure to include what time of year is best to do these activities, so that clients know what to wear..

Topic #3 Topic: Animal Wildlife

Find and list two species of regional wildlife unique to the region. Describe where they live in the region. Include a picture of each with captions of their names. At least one of the pictures must be hand drawn. Be sure to include whether they are active at night or doing the day so visitors know when they can view them.

Topic #4 Topic: Plant Life

Find and list two species of plant life (trees, flowers, etc.) unique to the region. Describe where they are located in the region. Include a picture of each with captions of their names. At least one of the pictures must be hand drawn. Be sure to include when is the best time or place to see these plants (e.g, summer, fall, winter, year around), so clients can plan the right time of year to see them.

Poster

Using an 11 x 17 piece of paper, draw, label and color a map of your selected region. Be sure to label the State capital. Include at least one item from each of your four Travel Flyers to create your poster, and label the nearest major city. Include a catchy slogan that draws attention to your poster.

Collecting Information

You should visit the given websites found in the Resources section. Begin to compile all of the information and images for which you are responsible.

Once all information is collected, select the important stuff and begin designing your travel flyers and poster. Note: you may decide to use color pencils to draw and color your artwork; markers may leak through the paper you choose.

You are welcome to use your social studies book, enclyclopedias, and conduct interviews of teachers and parents who have visited your chosen region, as well as other websites, as long as everything is listed on the Bibliography.

If you have trouble finding what you want, try using keywords from the links below and from the web pages at those links. Enter those keywords into the Google.com search engine.

These links are general in nature, but provide you with a front door to other information.

Sample brochures: type in "brochures for kids" in the Google Images search engine to see examples of layout possibilities. Use similar layout designs for your poster.
