Goal Setting

Introduction

Each and every year when the clock changes from 11:59pm to 12:00am people celebreate and make promises about the upcoming year. The calendar changes from one year to the next and many people intend to change with the calendar. May people make promises about eating healthier, stopping a habit, losing weight, and becoming a better person. Often however, these resolutions are usually forgotten about very quickly. Life gets in the way and there isn't enough time or it takes too much work. This webquest will have you looking at articles about resolutions and forming opinions about resolutions. You will then using research, create a resolution of your own. You will create a monitoring system and monitor the progress of your resolution. 

Task

The follwing outcomes will be assessed during this project:

Each part will be submitted and graded according to the rubrics found in 'Evaluation'-  More information about each task is found under 'Process'Task One: Opinion - This task will give you the opportunity to read and analyze various articles regarding resolutions. You will need to evaluate the information as it will help you to understand why some goals are not achieved which will be necessary in task two. Task Two: Goal Statement and Evaluation - In this task you will decide on a goal statement. You will evaluate this goal statement by identifying and understanding reasons that this goal is reasonable and achievable and also by idenitifying andunderstanding factors that may cause the goal not to be avhieved. You will create a goal using the SMART template.Task Three: Action Plan - You will design and carry out an action plan directly related to your goal. This action plan will help you to decide if the goal has been achieved or not. It will also help to idenitfy your progress and where you will still need work.

Process

Task One: Opinion

Step One - Read the following articles regarding New Year's resolutions. You will need to copy and paste these web addresses into your web browser.

Step Two - You will write a news article, letter or advice column. You can choose which you would like to complete but you must include the following ideas in what you choose to write:

    • Your opinion regarding New Year's resolutions - Do you think that we should continue to make them?
    • Explanation of why New Year's resolutions are usually unsuccessful
    • Ways to make a sucessful New Year's resolution
    • Identification of common New Year's resolutions.

Step Three - Once you have finished your piece, refer to the rubric to make sure you have included all of the necessary pieces.

Step Four - Submit your piece according to your teacher's instructions.

 

Task Two: Goal Statement and Evaluation

* Your goal needs to be picked from one of the follwoing topics:

- Safety

- Relationships

- Food choices

- Interacting with others

Step One - You will review the ideae of the SMART goal that was discussed in class. Using this template you will create a goal.

Step Two - On a Word document, type your goal statement. You will then need to explain the follwing ideas:

- Why did you chose this goal?

- Why is this goal important to you?

Step Three - On the same Word document created above, include all the pieces of a SMART goal, explaining each of the letters. Once you have finised refer to the rubric to make sure you have included all necessary pieces.

Step Four - Submit your piece according to your teacher's instructions

Task Three: Action Plan

Step One - You will discuss your goal with a partner. You two can brainstorm ways that you could keep track of your goal. Rememeber you will need to keep track of the progress of your goal for six days.

Step Two - Come up with a tool that you will use to keep track of your goal. You will create this this tool on a Word document. This tool needs to include the following ideas:

- Goal Statement

- Dates

- A place to fill in your progress for each of the six days

- A place to include any comments about your progress

** Do not throw this out when you have completed the six days - You will need it for steps four. It will also be handed in.

Step Three - You will anaylze the progress of your goal and write a summary. Your summary will need to include:

- Explanation of your goal

- Explanation of your tracking tool

- Explanation of your progress - What worked well? What still needs to be improved?

- Statement explaining if you reached your goal.

Step Four - Once you have finished refer to the rubric to make sure you have completed all the necessary pieces. Submit this piece according to your teacher's instructions
