The Bridge Home

Introduction

For your novel study, you will be reading: The Bridge Home by Padma Venkatraman.  Throughout this novel, you will encounter customs, traditions, values, and vocabulary from a different culture.  To help you better understand the text, you will conduct research on various words and phrases--some you may already know and others you may not even know how to pronounce.

Task

You will research the assigned word(s) for 3 facts that you find interesting and 3 facts that you feel are important (cannot be the same)  To help you, consider the 5 W's (who, what, where, when, why, and how):

  1. Religion - Hinduism, basic beliefs and holidays
  2. Religion - Christianity, basic beliefs and holidays
  3. Currency - Rupee and how it measures up to the US dollar
  4. Clothing - Sari, Kurta, Pavadai
  5. Foods - Biryahi, Gulab Jamun, Laddu, Murukku, Pakora
  6. Foods - Pakora, Payasam, Rasam, Roti, Vadai
  7. Leaders - Mahatma Ghandi
  8. Location - Chennai, India
  9. Location - Slums of India
  10. Health - Dengue Fever
  11. Weather - Tsunami, Monsoon

You will then plan a slide to add to a slideshow.  Once you are finished planning your slide, you will be placed in a group to create a 6 slide presentation on your group's topics (no repeat information).  The 6th side will be a bibliography page (additional resources on process tab).
