Introduction
Swimming
Swimming is useful for many reasons. It is a great way to get and stay fit. People often swim for recreation and fun, but some take it quite seriously as a sport. There are many different strokes in swimming, although not all of them are considered to be proper. The three most common strokes are front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke.
Front crawl, also known as freestyle, is a common stroke for speed. It is fairly easy to learn, but takes some time to master. It is performed by laying flat in the water with your legs kicking constantly, and your arms stretching above your head and pulling down, propelling your body forward. It is used by people who race because of its speed. The negative side of front crawl is it gets tiring quickly and you need to have good endurance to carry on for a long time at a consistent pace. Breathing is very important in front crawl. You have to time your breath with your stroke. Since your head is facing down in the water you can not breathe whenever you feel like it, but you must wait until the third arm stroke and you associate a head tilt and breath before starting your three arm pulls again.
Back crawl is an easier stroke. Lying on your back, you can breathe whenever needed. It is a slower stroke meant for relaxation. You do not see Olympians use it in races. Back crawl does not use up as much energy as front crawl. As the name suggests, this stroke is performed on your back. While constantly kicking, one arm is raised above your head. Your arm twists 180 degrees above your head, enters the water, and pulls out and down. This stroke is accomplished with both arms, one after another.
Breast stroke is a complex stroke but fairly relaxing if done properly. It is not as slow as back crawl yet not as fast and tiring as front crawl. Breaststroke is a good stroke for going long distances because it is fairly fast but not overly exhausting. It is used for recreation, but it was used for competition before front crawl took over. It is performed face down in the water. Breaststroke is usually preformed with whip kick but flutter kick works for beginners. The arms are stretched over your head. You pull around and in before shooting your arms out again. Before you shoot your arms take a quick breath and a kick. The order is pull, breath, kick, glide.
Humans have a natural means of staying afloat even if it is only for a few seconds. We all were given a sense of swimming, so it was never really invented. Archaeologists found ancient Egyptian tablets of people swimming and doing a form of front crawl. Competitive swimming started in the early 1800 in Europe. Swimming is not only fun but healthy too.
Task
My task is to improve my breath control while swimming.
Process
Research how to breath properly while performing front crawl, back crawl, and breast stoke.
Practice correct breathing while swimming each week.
Talk to my instructor about how I did, and evaluate myself each week.
Evaluation
I know that I am doing my breath control right because my teacher who is a trained swimmer told me that I was doing it right.
A common mistake that people do is getting into a rhythm that the can not manage or sustain.
Conclusion
In conclusion, my goal is to improve my breath control while doing the three main strokes.
